回帖︰European Elimination Could Cost Italy's Serie A Future Champions League Places
Italy's poor display in Europe this season could prove costly as four Champions League places could be reduced to three by 2011 should the negative trend continue...
Italy's consistent failure in Europe over the last five years could cost them a Champions League place in future, it is claimed.
A report in La Gazzetta Dello Sport explains that UEFA hands out Champions League places based on their coefficient ranking which is calculated on how well clubs do in Europe over a five-year period. Currently Italy are ranked third, and the top three national leagues each receive four places. However, this could change and Serie A may lose a place if they drop further as a result of their European failures.
Germany, who are fourth in the rankings, are only given three Champions League places. As things stand England lead UEFA's ranking with 76 points followed by Spain who are on 73. Italy are lagging behind with 63, while Germany have 54.
La Gazzetta Dello Sport claims Italy will have four places for next year's edition, but things could begin to get complicated the following year. The next UEFA coefficient calculation will run from the 2004/05 season up until the current term.
Should Bayern Munich win the Champions League, and Werder Bremen and Hamburg in the UEFA Cup all continue to succeed this season, then Italy could run the real risk of having just three participants in the Champions League from 2011, as Germany could overtake them into third place in the rankings.
