Martin O'Neill: Nicky Shorey Still Has A Future At Aston Villa
Shorey has been told to buckle down and fight to maintain his place in Villa's first team...

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill is adamant that wantaway left-back Nicky Shorey can keep his place in the Villa first team provided he is willing to fight for it.
Shorey was set to move to Portsmouth on a season-long loan on the transfer deadline day, only to decline the a move to Fratton Park at the last moment.
O'Neill has told Shorey that he is still in the teams plans at Villa Park, though, he will have to compete with Wilfred Bouma and newcomer Stephen Warnock.
"Does Shorey have a part to play? Of course. I think Nicky and his agent pre-empted things a little bit by thinking he was not going to play," O'Neill told the Birmingham Mail.
"I had certainly not been pushing him out but something came up and they wanted to explore that. I gave them that opportunity but it didn't come off.
"Nicky wants to come back here and really fight for a place in the side. We have Warnock and then Freddie Bouma to come back so there's options which will be very important between now and January."
Shorey has been a first team regular since reclaiming his place back in April, fending off Warnock's challenge to start in last Sunday's victory over Fulham.
