Fulham's preparations for Sunday's Boxing Day clash with West Ham| have not been disrupted by the adverse weather conditions, all thanks to the Club's groundstaff who have been working overtime to ensure the training facilities required by Mark Hughes' squad are fit and ready for purpose, as defender Aaron Hughes explained.
“It’s a little bit difficult out there but the groundsmen have been doing a really good job at the Training Ground," Hughes told fulhamfc.com this week. "It’s still a little bit slippy when you take the covers off but we’d rather be training outside than inside the dome. I think the fact that we’ve even been playing on the training pitches is testament to how hard the groundstaff have been working.
“It’s still normal training but we’ve got to be sensible about tackling and the lads are good about that when the conditions aren’t good. At the end of the day you’re training with your teammates and you don’t want to put someone out!"
Hughes and company were forced out of action last weekend when the Club's Premier League match against Liverpool at Anfield was postponed on Saturday morning. The Northern Ireland international captain was pragmatic when discussing the disappointment taking into account the recent weather conditions across the country.
“We got up to Liverpool on Friday night and came back on Saturday morning," Hughes explained. "From when we went for dinner at 7pm on Friday night it snowed constantly. It was big, heavy flakes of snowand when we got up in the morning there was about a foot of snow outside.
“Obviously the roads around the ground weren’t good and the consideration was for the safety of the fans travelling to the game. It was sensible when you look at what the conditions have been like across the country. All the advice has been to stay off the roads.
“We were quite lucky because we only just caught the train on the way back to London. It was a bit of a strange day with the game being a 5pm kick-off. It’s different in terms of times of eating. We got up for breakfast in the morning thinking, ‘is this even going to go ahead?’We were ready for the game, we had prepared all week and travelled up there so it was disappointing, but you can’t do anything about the conditions."
All thoughts at Fulham are now firmly fixed on Sunday's fixture against West Ham at the Cottage and Hughes is hoping home advantage will pay dividends against their London rivals on Boxing Day.
“It’s a big game for both teams because both Clubs are looking for points to get up the table," said Hughes. "It will be a tough game but we’re at home and hopefully we can use that advantage to come out on top on Sunday."
