Carlton Cole's deadline day transfer to West Bromich Albion has broken down after West Ham failed to land Emmanuel Adebayor, according to Sky sources.
The 31-year-old former England striker arrived at the Baggies' training ground to complete a transfer but was ordered back by the Hammers in the final hour of the window.
Sky sources understand his deal to join Tony Pulis's side hinged on West Ham taking Adebayor on loan from Tottenham, which had been agreed with the player but not Spurs, who refused to loan him to a Premier League rival.
Cole's failed move to the West Midlands also meant West Brom striker Brown Ideye's proposed move to Qatari side Al Gharafa was called off at the last minute.
In a statement released earlier on deadline day, the Baggies said: "West Brom agree to sell Brown Ideye to Qatari side Al Gharafa for £3.77m, subject to payment guarantees satisfying club.”
West Ham's Cole has found himself struggling to feature in Sam Allardyce's first-team plans this season, and has made only 14 appearances in all competitions, scoring just three goals.
Cole, who began his career at Chelsea in 2001 before loan spells with Wolves, Charlton and Aston Villa, arrived at Upton Park in 2006 but was released in the summer of 2013.
He then returned on a short-term deal in October that year and signed another contract last summer. Cole made his England debut in February 2009 and went on to win a further seven caps, all from the substitutes' bench.
