Milner holding talks at Villa Park
Newcastle winger James Milner could be returning to Aston Villa on a permanent basis.
The Magpies have given Villa manager Martin O'Neill permission to speak to Milner who spent last season on loan at the West Midlands club.
O'Neill's predecessor David O'Leary had spelt out his desire to sign Milner in a £3million deal in the summer before parting company with Villa six weeks ago.
Now O'Neill could make Milner his second signing since taking charge, with the player travelling down from the north-east on Thursday to hold talks.
A Villa statement read: "The club can confirm that James Milner is travelling down to the West Midlands to discuss a permanent move to Villa.
"Milner was given permission to speak to manager Martin O'Neill by his club Newcastle this morning."
The England Under-21 international was one of the few success stories for Villa in a season of gross underachievement and became a popular figure with supporters.
He played 33 times for the club in 2005-06 and scored three times - including on his home debut against Tottenham.
Milner returned to Villa Park on Sunday as part of the Newcastle side beaten 2-0 by O'Neill's side.
O'Neill has already signed Celtic midfielder Stilian Petrov in an £8million deal.
