Musacchio set to join Tottenham, admits Villarreal coach



Villarreal coach Marcelino accepts that centre-back Mateo Musacchio is set to join Tottenham.

Spurs had been considering an offer for the 23-year-old after he was voted the Spanish club’s player of the season in 2013-14 and are now on the verge of completing a deal.

Marcelino now "expects" Musacchio to make the switch to White Hart Lane, despite how difficult he sees the task of finding a replacement.

He told reporters: "It's a situation with three parties: the player, the buyer and the club in the middle and,

as I have said many times, if the club sell an important player it's because the right conditions to do so have been met.

"Things will change quite a lot [for this team]. The quality and level of [Musacchio] will make it difficult to find a replacement.

"It's always more complicated to adapt the team to a new defender than to a forward or midfielder [and] it's not easy, at this level, to find a new defender.

It won't be easy [to replace him] but the solution, for better or worse, will be found soon."

The coach lamented that, having already wanted to bring in another centre-back this summer, he would now have to find two.

"Mateo is a very important player for Villarreal," he added. "He's an excellent player and will be a difficult loss to cover, especially as he plays in a tough position to reinforce."

Transfer news: Tottenham in Mateo Musacchio talks with Villarreal



Tottenham are in talks with Villarreal over the transfer of £17million-rated defender Mateo Musacchio, according to Sky sources.

The 23-year-old Argentina international centre-back, who can also fill-in at right-back, made 32 appearances in La Liga last season.

Musacchio has won two caps for Argentina, having begun his career with River Plate in Buenos Aires before moving to Spain five years ago.

New Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has already brought in Ben Davies, Michel Vorm

and Eric Dier this summer, while Jan Vertonghen is being linked with a move away from White Hart Lane.

Speaking earlier this summer, Villarreal coach Marcelino said: "It's a situation with three parties: the player, the buyer and the club in the middle.

Sky Sports also understands Tottenham are continuing talks with Villarreal over Argentine centre-back Mateo Mussachio.

The two clubs opened discussions last week but the deal is complicated due to third-party ownership of the 23-year-old, who can also play at right-back.

Musacchio close to Tottenham move after Villarreal sign Victor Ruiz

Villarreal centre-back Mateo Musacchio is a step closer to joining Tottenham after the Spanish side signed Victor Ruiz on loan from Valencia on Monday.

Villarreal coach Marcelino admitted last week that Musacchio was set to sign for Spurs and left the Argentine defender out of his side's travelling party

for the 3-0 friendly win over Swansea on Saturday as negotiations between the two clubs continued.

The Yellow Submarine were unwilling to part company with the 23-year-old until a replacement had been identified, but Goal understands the transfer moved closer to its completion

after Ruiz was unveiled on Monday in a loan deal from regional rivals Valencia with a view to a permanent move next summer.

Musacchio has a release clause set at ?50 million,

but Villarreal are expected to settle for around ?20m for the highly-rated Argentine defender, who has also interested Real Madrid and Barcelona in the past.

However, the Liga side only own 35 per cent of Musacchio's playing rights, with 35% belonging to his former club River Plate and the remaining 30% to the defender's representatives.

Villarreal want at least ?15m of the total fee from Tottenham themselves for their most marketable player

and hope the Premier League club and the player's agent, Marcelo Lombilla, can come to an agreement with River Plate over the remainder of the funds.

Musacchio is keen on a move to White Hart Lane and a link-up with compatriot Mauricio Pochettino,

himself a fine centre-back in his playing days, but his agent will now need to renounce his 30 per cent stake for the deal to go through.

Villarreal's public stance, meanwhile, is that Musacchio remains a key part of the club's plans

and president Fernando Roig has told local media the defender will be offered a new contract in the coming days.
