Man City's Javi Garcia a transfer target for Zenit St Petersburg as they make £12.5million bid
Reserve midfielder is set to be sold with the champions having to trim Champions League squad after financial fair play ruling



Javi Garcia will be the next big-money star to leave Manchester City, after a £12.5million bid from wealthy Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.

The midfielder arrived at Eastlands in summer 2012 in a surprise £16m deal from Portuguese giants Benfica.

But with the champions forced to trim their squad after falling foul of financial fair play rules

and following the arrival of Brazilian Fernando, he has been deemed surplus to requirements.

City are hoping to recoup most of the fee they paid for the Spain international.

While negotiations with Zenit - now managed by ex-Chelsea and Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas -

are likely to continue over the weekend, it now seems certain Garcia is on his way out.

He will follow Joleon Lescott, Jack Rodwell and Gareth Barry in departing this summer.

And more may leave as manager

Manuel Pellegrini looks to trim his squad to meet the requirement that he selects from only 21 senior players in the Champions League.

The City boss must also have at least FIVE English or English-trained players in his European squad

so he may be reluctant to allow Micah Richards and Dedryck Boyata to go, even though both want first team football.

Javi Garcia is set to leave Manchester City for Zenit St Petersburg in a deal worth nearly £13m to end his two seasons at the champions,
with the Russian club hopeful of announcing his signature at a press conference on Thursday.

The Spaniard’s transfer is for a fee of £12m plus a further £800,000 in add-ons,
with Garcia having fallen even further behind in the thinking of Manuel Pellegrini after the purchase of Fernando from Porto to strengthen his central midfield options.

With Yaya Toure and Fernandinho the established starters in the position and Eliaquim Mangala’s £32m arrival this week as a centre-back -
where Garcia has been used in an emergency - the prospects of him enjoying regular first-team actionhad been greatly reduced.

While Andre Villas-Boas, the Zenit coach, views Garcia an automatic choice as one of seven overseas players allowed to start league games under Russian football federation rules,
if the 27-year-old does depart that would still leave City with 17 non-homegrown players following the arrival of France international Mangala.

This means Pellegrini would have to drop at least one for the allowed quota of 16 for City’s Champions League squad.
As Alvaro Negredo could be out until early October due to a metatarsal injury the striker is the current favourite to be excluded by the manager.
