Former FIFA executive committee member Franz Beckenbauer is provisionally banned from any football-related activity for 90 days
Former FIFA executive committee member Franz Beckenbauer has been provisionally banned from any football-related activity for 90 days. Football’s world governing body has taken the step over "an apparent breach" of ethics.
A statement from FIFA read: "The apparent breach relates to Mr Beckenbauer's failure to cooperate with an ethics committee investigation despite repeated requests for his assistance.”
Beckenbauer refused "repeated requests for his assistance, including requests that he provide information during an in-person interview or in response
to written questions provided in both English and German," the statement continued. FIFA has come under pressure in the last week to Beckenbauer from football
after the German admitted refusing to cooperate with the investigation into Qatar’s 2022 World Cup bid. Beckenbauer, who won the World Cup in 1974 when he was captain of West Germany,
and then won the competition in 1990 as manager of his country, is one of the most revered figures in football.
The 68-year-old confirmed last week that he had snubbed an approach to be interviewed by FIFA’s chief investigator over the controversial 2010 vote.
