Frank Lampard: Man City set to sign ex-Chelsea player on loan

Manchester City are set to sign former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard on loan from New York City FC.
Lampard was released by Chelsea this summer after 13 years at Stamford Bridge, his 211 goals in 649 matches making him the club's record scorer.
The 36-year-old signed for New York City last month on a two-year contract.
The Major League Soccer franchise is owned by Manchester City and baseball giants New York Yankees, but the team's season does not start until March 2015.
Manchester City declined to comment,
but Lampard could be at their Carrington training ground as early as next week for manager Manuel Pellegrini to monitor his fitness.
The loan deal is likely to run until mid-January,
and City plan to register the England international for both their Premier League and Champions League campaigns.
Manchester City won their second Premier League title in three years last season, with Chelsea finishing third.
The two sides meet at Etihad Stadium on 21 September.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, Lampard was Chelsea's vice-captain
and won the Premier League title three times and the Champions League and Europa League once apiece.
The former West Ham player also helped the Blues win four FA Cups and the League Cup twice.
On signing for New York City FC, Lampard said: "New York ticks all the right boxes for me. It's very exciting."
Former Spain striker David Villa, 32, has also joined the MLS franchise,
though he will spend three months on loan at Melbourne FC, Manchester City's Australian partner club.
Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano said:
"One of the reasons David Villa and Frank Lampard decided to come to New York is because they know who manages and who owns the club."
Lampard, who won his 106th England cap during the World Cup in Brazil, said he would make a decision on his international career once his club future was finalised.

At his official New York unveiling, Lampard said: "I'm going to keep fit, that's the main thing. How I do that is not clear yet.
"I'm going to sit round with people at the club and sort that out."
A number of MLS players have spent the US close-season on loan to Premier League clubs,
including Clint Dempsey at Fulham, Landon Donavan at Everton, Robbie Keane at Aston Villa and Thierry Henry at Arsenal.

Frank Lampard could spend a loan spell with Melbourne City as he must wait until February to make his debut for New York City FC.

The 36-year-old midfielder signed a two-year deal with New York, but the new franchise will only join the MLS at the start of next season.

Lampard will hold talks with his new club about how to maintain his fitness levels

and sporting director Claudio Reyna refused to rule out a temporary move to Melbourne City, who like New York, have a tie-up with Manchester City.

"There's that possibility, but we really haven't spoken about it," Reyna told Sky Sports News.

"We wanted to make sure that Frank had his vacation that he's earned and is well deserved after so many years in the Premier League as well as the World Cup.

"We're going to sit down this week - he's here in New York for another week or so -

and we'll have those discussions on just planning what we do with him for five months and that is an option.

"But we just need to speak together as a group, with Manchester City as well, and see what they think as far as our group.

"But one thing for sure is we’re really confident he looks after himself and that he’ll be ready to go in January 2015."


Lampard has revealed how his uncle Harry Redknapp, the QPR boss, was keen to sign him but he did not want to join a rival London club after ending a lengthy spell with Chelsea.

"I think my Dad spoke to Harry quite a lot and we had some conversations," he said.  

"But it wasn't really an option for me. I had 13 years at Chelsea and it's something very dear to me so it would have been difficult to play for a club so close.

"There were other options in England and all around the world - but this is the one that stood out for me."

Lampard is yet to make a decision about his international future and could follow the example of David Beckham who continued his England career after moving to the MLS.  

"I think the whole England thing is always on an individual basis," he said. "David Beckham did it. I think some people retire when they are 30 years of age or for the sake of their careers.

"I need to make sure I make the right decision for me because I've enjoyed playing for my country so much that I want to make sure that I do it at the right time, and it feels right for me.

Transfer News: Manchester City in talks with Frank Lampard over loan move

New York City midfielder Frank Lampard is in talks with Manchester City over a six-month loan deal, according to Sky sources.

The former Chelsea player joined New York City, owned by Manchester City and baseball giants New York Yankees, on July 24.

It was thought Lampard, 36, had agreed an autumn switch to join

Manchester City's sister side Melbourne City where he would play alongside New York City teammate David Villa.

But the news of his decision to join Manuel Pellegrini's side will no doubt cause huge disappointment for Australian football fans.

It is not clear whether Lampard would feature regularly in City's first team but the midfielder will be keen to sharpen his fitness before the start of the MLS campaign in March.

City face Chelsea on September 21 in the Premier League and it is possible Lampard will be allowed to sit out of the clash.

He suggested last year he would not play for another top flight club in England.

He said in May 2013: "I can't imagine playing for anyone else after being 12 years at Chelsea. I

've got a lot of respect for a lot of other Premier League clubs, particularly the top ones, but I'm not sure I could have done that."

Transfer news: Frank Lampard backed to join Manchester City on loan

Sky Bet have slashed the odds on Frank Lampard joining Manchester City on loan following a sudden run of bets.

The 36-year-old signed for New York City FC, who enter the MLS next year,

after ending his 13-year stay at Chelsea and has been linked with a host of clubs as he looks to maintain his fitness.

Spain striker David Villa also signed up for the new MLS franchise and has since joined A-League outfit Melbourne City on loan.

Like Melbourne City, New York City FC are partially owned by City Football Group,

and Eithad Stadium executive Ferran Soriano has already indicated certain youth players could spend some of their development time at the Yankees Stadium.

Melbourne (5/2) and QPR (8/1) are considered possible destinations for Lampard but Manchester City were backed in to clear favourites on Friday.

Sky Bet Football Trader Jamie Munro said on Friday: "We've seen more stakes on Manchester City signing Lampard in the last 24 hours than on the entire market previously.

"It would certainly make sense given the link between the two sides, so we've reacted by cutting the odds significantly."

Transfer News: Former Chelsea star Frank Lampard joins Manchester City in loan move

Manchester City have secured former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard on a six-month loan deal.

The 36-year-old will join up with his new City teammates on Wednesday and will be at the Etihad Stadium until January.

It is a short-term move for Lampard who signed in July for New York City, the MLS club owned by Manchester City and baseball giants New York Yankees.

On Friday it was reported the club was in talks with Lampard's representatives and immediately

after City's shoot-out defeat by Olympiakos in the US on Saturday, manager Manuel Pellegrini confirmed the move had been completed.

Pellegrini said: "From Wednesday, he will start working with us and play for us until January."

When asked if Lampard was acquired just to improve his fitness for the MLS campaign which begins in March,

the Chilean added: "He’s a member of the squad and he will fight for his position.

"He knows we have a good team and we have a lot of games in the Champions League so he's very important for our team."

It had initially been thought the player had agreed an autumn switch to join City's sister side Melbourne City

where he would play alongside New York City teammate David Villa to improve his fitness and so this news will be a disappointment to Australian football fans.

It was also confirmed that Lampard would be available for the Premier League showdown with his old club Chelsea on Sunday, September 21.

On this fixture, Pellegrini added: "I will talk about that with him but he is a player for Manchester City and he will play every game that he needs to play."

This may raise some eyebrows at Stamford Bridge, with the England midfielder suggesting last year he would not play for another top-flight club in England.
