Southampton continue squad overhaul with £15m arrival of Che Adams and £17m departure of Matt Targett



Southampton are expected to formalise two major trades on Monday with the arrival of Che Adams from Birmingham City for around £15 million and the departure of homegrown left-back Matt Targett to Aston Villa.

Premier League returnees Villa have agreed a fee of £14m rising to £17m for Targett, a player whom Saints rate. They understand his frustrations at playing understudy, aged 23, to first-choice Ryan Bertrand. The fee demonstrated that the market for Targett was strong with his former loan club Fulham interested, as well as Newcastle United and West Ham.

Targett will have a medical at Aston Villa on Sunday before completing the move, by which time Saints hope to have completed the deal for Che Adams, the 22-year-old striker who was top goalscorer for Birmingham in the Championship last season and the club’s player of the year.

They had first bid for the player in January at around £10m and came back to the table earlier this window with a second £14m bid that was rejected. The latest offer of £15m has been successful and he will sign subject to a medical.

The Southampton squad is being comprehensively re-worked by manager Ralph Hasenhuttl and the director of football operations, Ross Wilson. There are expected to be moves away from Southampton for another homegrown player, striker Sam Gallagher, 23, and the experienced centre-forward Charlie Austin in whom there is considerable interest.

Southampton are looking at potential moves for Mario Lemina, Wesley Hoedt, Fraser Forster, Alex McCarthy and Cedric Soares. Their next priority will be signing a centre-back.
