Sweden defender Andreas Granqvist has joined Serie A club Genoa from Groningen in the Netherlands for a fee of around £1.8 million.
The former Wigan defender, 26, has penned a four-year contract after three seasons in Holland, where he was contracted until June 2012.
"I've known all of this season with Groningen that I wanted to join a bigger league," he said. "The club understood this. Along with the Premier League, I regard Serie A as one of the best leagues in the world.
"I'm very happy with my transfer to Genoa. I think this is a club that suits me just fine and will allow me to develop further.
"I've had three fantastic years with Groningen, though. The people at the club, the coaches, my team-mates, I want to thank them all very much for my time at Euroborg.
"Finally I want to thanks the Groningen fans for their unconditional support."
