Arsenal’s defensive woes were exposed by Aston Villa this past Saturday, and with Laurent Koscielny likely to be sidelined for a while after an injury suffered against Fenerbache, the Gunners have just one fit center-half. However, the supporters received some assurance when Wenger boldly stated his plans to delve into the transfer market in the coming days.
He said, “The transfer market starts for me now and a lot of activity will happen between now and September 2.”
“From August 21 until September 2 you have 12 days, so a lot will happen. It starts now.”
Metro suggest that the Gunners are weighing up a £6 million bid for Belgium international, Toby Alderweireld as they hope to sort out their defensive worries. The 24-year-old center-back has less than 12 months to run on his Ajax contract and is strongly tipped to join the Premier League this summer.
However, the Gunners will be facing stiff competition for the Belgian as bitter rivals Spurs too have joined the pursuit and with international and former club compatriot Jan Vertonghen at Spurs, Alderweireld could be swayed into moving to the Lane.
