Emiliano Sala: Cardiff City sign Nantes striker for undisclosed club-record fee

Cardiff City have signed Nantes' Argentine striker Emiliano Sala for an undisclosed club-record fee.

The 28-year-old has scored 13 league and cup goals this season, making him the third top-scorer in Ligue 1 behind Kylian Mbappe and Nicolas Pepe.

The fee beats the £11m Cardiff paid for Chile international Gary Medel in 2013.

The move had earlier appeared to have fallen through, but a deal was confirmed on Saturday subject to international clearance.

"I'm very happy to be here," said Sala. "It gives me great pleasure and I can't wait to start training, meet my new teammates and get down to work."

Speaking after the deal was announced, Cardiff City's chief executive Ken Choo said: "It's obviously been a long process to secure the services of Emiliano.

"But I'm very pleased that we're now in a position whereby we can confirm his signature and officially announce him as a Cardiff City player.

"I'm sure all Cardiff City fans will join me in that and we can look forward to seeing our record signing in a Bluebirds shirt."

Sala becomes Cardiff's second signing of the January transfer window after Everton striker Oumar Niasse joined on loan a day earlier.

Goals have been hard to come by for Cardiff this season. Their tally of 19 is the second lowest in the division, only bottom of the league Huddersfield have less (13).

沙拿消失左

多家英媒報導，創下卡迪夫城隊史收購紀錄的伊米利安奴沙拿 (Emiliano Sala) 所乘坐的私人飛機失蹤，據稱卡迪夫城對此「非常擔心」。

卡迪夫城週六宣佈了這宗價值一千七百萬歐元的轉會，這位來自南特的前鋒拒絕了中國的邀請，希望登陸英超。

據稱球員在完成轉會後飛回法國，本應在週二返回卡迪夫城報到訓練。現在報導稱卡迪夫城對伊米利安奴沙拿目前的情況非常擔心。

There are growing concerns new Cardiff striker Emiliano Sala was on board an aircraft that has gone missing.

Sky Sports News understands the club were expecting their new £18m signing to travel back to Cardiff on Monday night.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, emergency services in the Channel Islands reported that a small plane travelling from Nantes in France to Cardiff had gone missing near the island of Alderney.

Authorities say the Piper Malibu, which is believed to have two people on board, disappeared from radar near the Casquets lighthouse at about 8:30pm on Monday, Guernsey Police said.

A search and rescue operation is now underway

HM Coastguard said the incident was not in the UK search and rescue area, although it confirmed it had sent two helicopters to help.

"HM Coastguard are currently assisting Guernsey Coastguard with a search for a light aircraft off Alderney in the Channel Islands," a spokeswoman said.

"HM Coastguard helicopters from Solent and Newquay have been helping to search overnight with nothing found."

Cardiff completed the signing of Sala from Nantes on Saturday on a three-and-a-half year deal.

Wed Jan 16: Cardiff City close to signing Emiliano Sala. They want deal to be done in time for him to be on the bench at Newcastle on Saturday. That would have meant registering him by the Premier League deadline of midday Friday.

Sala was not due to be involved in Nantes game v Nimes last Wednesday, but is named as a substitute. He comes on after 72 minutes. Nantes lose 1-0.
In the game Nantes striker Kalifa Coulibaly was sent off meaning he would be suspended for their next game against Angers on Sunday. Short of attacking options, Nantes wanted Sala to play one more game for them - against Angers - on Sunday.

Thu Jan 17: Sala awaits permission to fly to Cardiff for his medical but does not receive the go-ahead until early Friday.

Fri Jan 18: Sala flies to Cardiff and has medical. He passes it but it's too late for him to be involved against Newcastle the next day.
He carries out press duties with Cardiff on Friday evening and poses for a picture holding a Cardiff shirt with fans outside the stadium.

Sat Jan 19: As he was not required to train with Cardiff until Tuesday, Sala flew back to Nantes to sort out his personal affairs and to say goodbye to his friends and teammates. Cardiff lose 3-0 at Newcastle before they announce Sala's signing at 20:10.

Sun Jan 20: Nantes lose 1-0 at Angers.

Mon Jan 21: Sala posts pictures on social media saying goodbye to Nantes teammates, ahead of a flight to Cardiff. The plan was for Sala to settle and train and be available for Cardiff’s next game - away at Arsenal next Tuesday.

Nantes' Coupe de France game tomorrow away at Entente SSG has been postponed. The game will now be played on Sunday.

A 11.45am update from Guernsey police: “So far over 1,000sq miles have been searched by a total of five aircraft and two lifeboats. It is being co-ordinated by the Joint Emergency Services Control Centre. There has been no trace of the aircraft. The search is continuing.”
