Speculation over the future of Wayne Rooney is likely to go into overdrive after
it was revealed that the striker is returning home from the club's pre-season tour of the Far East. The official reason given for Rooney cutting short his time on tour, for which United only arrived today, is that he has suffered a hamstring injury.
A tweet on Manchester United's official Twitter account read: "Breaking: Wayne Rooney to fly home from #mutour after sustaining a hamstring injury," adding that Rooney is expected to be unavailable for selection for a month. However, that is unlikely to quell speculation that it is related to the ongoing uncertainty over his future.
Shortly before the conclusion of last season, former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that Rooney verbally asked to leave the club.
The striker's camp has denied that is the case, although when David Moyes spoke to the media for the first time since replacing Ferguson, he was unable to categorically state Rooney wants to remain at Old Trafford.
United have said Rooney is a United player, and will remain a United player. However, the Independent understands that Chelsea have made the England international their top transfer target and are increasingly confident of bringing the 27-year-old to Stamford Bridge.
Rooney has two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford and it's thought United will look to do all that they can to tie him to a new contract, but if they fail, could be forced to sell.
