Wolves keen on Hooper
Midlanders enquire over Celtic striking ace

Skysports.com understands Wolves have made an enquiry for Celtic striker Gary Hooper.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy holds a long-term interest in the 23-year-old, having tried to sign him from Scunthorpe before he made the move to Parkhead last summer.

Celtic are unlikely to part ways with their star hitman unless the Premier League side table a big-money offer.

Hooper established himself as a key player at the Scottish Premier League club last season, ending the campaign as the Bhoys' top scorer with 22 goals.

The forward has also made a bright start to the current campaign, netting three times in four league outings.

Skysports.com understands Queens Park Rangers are lining up a beat-the-deadline move for Birmingham defender Liam Ridgewell.

Ridgewell is hoping to leave Birmingham and he handed in a transfer request on Tuesday in a bid to force a move away from the club.

Birmingham are reluctant to part with Ridgewell and have turned down his request as they look to keep hold of the former Aston Villa man.

Swansea are believed to have had a loan request for Ridgewell rejected earlier this week as they seek defensive cover after losing Alan Tate to injury.

Celtic, West Brom and Stoke have all been credited with an interest in Ridgewell this summer, but now QPR have entered the race for the player.

The 27-year-old's versatility in that he can play in central defence as well as left-back makes him an attractive proposition to QPR boss Neil Warnock.

Warnock is keen to bolster his squad before Wednesday's deadline and he is hoping to lure Ridgewell to Loftus Road.

French side insists forward won't be joining Newcastle

Sochaux have insisted that they will not be selling forward Modibo Maiga on transfer deadline day.

Newcastle had been hoping to land the 23-year-old, who had previously gone on strike to try and force through a move to the North East.

Sochaux, who earlier this month threatened to report Newcastle to Fifa, confirmed that they were considering a bid but the French club insisted that they would only sell if they had a replacement.

They wanted Leeds United's Max Gradel but he has opted for their Ligue 1 rivals St Etienne and that means Sochaux are not planning on letting Maiga leave.

"If we had found a successor, he would have gone," Sochaux chairman Alexander Lacombe said, admitting he could instead leave in January.

"If we find a replacement in December then, yes he could leave in the winter."

Lacombe admitted they failed to get Gradel, saying: "On the one hand it would have been a disadvantage as he is due to play in the African Cup of Nations.

"But it is up to Leeds, they are the selling club."

Germany striker stops training with Bundesliga club Wolfsburg

Sunderland could make a deadline-day swoop for Wolfsburg and Germany striker Patrick Helmes.

The 27-year-old forward left Bayer Leverkusen for Wolfsburg in January for £4.5m but could be on his way out of the Volkswagen Arena after just a short period.

Manager Felix Magath has allowed Helmes to withdraw from training and the Black Cats could make a move to bolster their attacking options, while French club Evian have also been monitoring his situation.

Magath told kicker-Sportmagazin: "Patrick Helmes has not been training with our squad on Tuesday, I have allowed him to do so."

Helmes has netted 35 goals in 82 Bundesliga matches in his career to date as well as two goals in 13 internationals for Germany since his debut under Joachim Low in 2007.

Injury-jinxed Owen Hargreaves is poised to finalise his shock move to Manchester City after the former Manchester United midfielder passed a stringent medical with the Premier League big spenders.

The 30-year-old is due to complete a highly incentivised one-year pay-as-you-play deal with City after becoming a free agent following his release by arch-rivals United, where he managed to play just 39 times in four years due to knee problems.

It is understood that the former England international – who underwent a three-hour medical at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hospital on Tuesday - will receive a relatively basic salary that will be dwarfed by his new colleagues with his new deal heavily linked to the amount of appearances he makes for Roberto Mancini’s team.

Hargreaves has been linked with former club Bayern Munich, Tottenham and West Brom since he was released by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson following the expiry of his Old Trafford contract and left even though he offered to play for the Premier League champions for free.

Hargreaves, who has suffered with acute tendinitis problems since heading to Old Trafford in a ?21.4 million deal with Bayern Munich, will be able to put his past experience to good use at City as the club prepares for its first Champions League campaign as he won the competition during his spell with the Bundesliga side.

The FA Cup winners are keen to intensify competition for places as they pursue honours on four fronts and will be without Yaya Toure for a month in January and February as he represents Ivory Coast in the African Nations Cup.

With Mancini seeking a back-up to defensive midfielder Nigel de Jong, City have been linked with Real Madrid’s Fernando Gago, Roma’s Daniele de Rossi and AC Milan’s Dutch international Mark van Bommel, but the move for Hargreaves has been welcomed by England defender Joleon Lescott.

“He has plenty of experience in the Champions League so it will be good for the squad,” Lescott told reporters. “He is a great professional so it can only be good for the club.”

Lyon confirm agreement with Roma for transfer of Miralem Pjanic

Lyon have confirmed they have an agreement in place to sell Miralem Pjanic to Roma.

The 21-year-old Bosnia international, said "anything can happen" on Tuesday when asked whether a move to Serie A was in the pipeline, and now the French club's director of sport, Bernard Lacombe, has confirmed talks have progressed, claiming it is down to Roma to take the move forward and ensure the midfielder agrees terms.

"There is an agreement with the Roma directors and ourselves regarding the mode of transfer," Lacombe told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"But, I do not want to say more on the deal for now as Miralem still needs to accept a transfer."

As well as a deal for Pjanic, Roma have also been linked with a last-gasp move for Real Madrid's Fernando Gago, with Palermo also said to be keen on signing the Argentine.
