Bolton Wanderers have completed the signing of Middlesbrough defender David Wheater.
The former England U21 centre-back has joined Owen Coyle's side for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £2.5 million, after signing a three-and-a-half year contract with the Trotters.
"I met with the manager and we had a good chat about football," Wheater told Bolton's official website. "I had a look around the facilities and it was a really easy decision to make.
"From what I've seen there is a really great atmosphere at the club and a real buzz about the place and I'm looking forward to working hard and showing the manager what I can do."
Wheater, 23, made over 150 appearances for Boro after graduating from the club's youth ranks in 2004.
He was at one time touted to win a full call-up, but Boro's relegation from the Premier League in 2009 damaged his international prospects.
It is unlikely that Wheater's arrival will hasten the departure of highly-rated Trotters defender Gary Cahill, as Coyle has been desperate to bolster the numbers in his squad as he chases a European place. A spate of injuries has seen him unable to name a full complement of substitutes for several recent matches.
