Muricy Ramalho To Be New Brazil Coach
The Fluminense trainer met today with the head of the CBF Ricardo Teixeira and accepted the position.
Muricy Ramalho will take over the vacant Brazil job, after the Fluminense coach met with CBF head Ricardo Teixeira.
SporTV reports that Ramalho met with Teixeira on Friday afternoon, when the coach was made aware of the CBF's interest in him succeeding former boss Dunga. The 1994 World Cup winning captain was sacked shortly after the Selecao crashed out of this summer's event in South Africa at the quarter-final stage.
Ex-Palmeiras head Ramalho currently tops the Brasileirao Serie A with his Fluminense side, and is highly rated in domestic football. He had previously won three national titles with Sao Paulo in consecutive years in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
The coach still has a contract for the Tricolor until the end of the season, and it is still unclear what the 54-year-old's next move will be. CBF director of communications Rodrigo Paiva revealed that Muricy has been offered the job and accepted, but will meet with Fluminense directors shortly to decide whether he will juggle both positions until the end of his contract or leave immediately.
Update 22:41 CET: Fluminense are keen to hold on to Ramalho as head coach and insist he will stay with the club until December 2012, according to club vice-president Alcides Antunes.
"Ricardo Teixeira has already given his position. Our position is that Muriciy is only in charge at Fluminense. If Fluminense could release Muricy, we would do it. But we have no interest in releasing him," he reportedly said at a press conference.
"We have an ongoing project. He is very happy here."
He also slammed the CBF for going directly to Romalho and not dealing with the club.
"We will not communicate with the CBF because they did not talk with us. That does not mean Fluminense has put their foot down in terms of not releasing him. It is a joint decision. We have no interest in letting him go," he concluded.
