Arsenal 1-1 Chelsea (4-1 pens) player ratings as Olivier Giroud converts winning spot-kick in Community ShieldThe Frenchman's penalty decided the Community Shield after Alvaro Morata and Thibaut Courtois missed their spot kicks
Olivier Giroud was the man of the moment as Arsenal won the Community Shield in a nervous penalty shoot-out on Sunday. Both Alvaro Morata and Thibaut Courtois missed their spot kicks before the Frenchman stepped up and smashed past Chelsea's Belgian keeper. The clash was a tight affair for the most part, and the two sides went into the break level after Gunners new boy Alexandre Lacazette clattered the post in the first 45 minutes.
Per Mertesacker was forced off with a nasty gash to the face following a sickening clash with Gary Cahill and was subsequently replaced by Sead Kolasinac.
Chelsea took the lead moments after the restart when Victor Moses fired home from close range, as the Blues looked to see out the game comfortably.
But a Pedro red card for a reckless tackle on Mohamed Elneny gave the Gunners a glimmer of hope and Serbian left-back Kolasinac grabbed an equaliser.
Giroud then had the final say from the spot to win the shield for Arsenal.
