Manchester United 4-1 Fenerbahce: Paul Pogba double inspires United

Manchester United produced a vintage European display to move joint-top of Europa League Group A with a scintillating 4-1 victory over Fenerbahce.

Paul Pogba's 31st-minute penalty broke the deadlock at Old Trafford before Anthony Martial doubled United's lead from the spot three minutes later.

The world's most-expensive player struck a brilliant third on the stroke of half-time before Jesse Lingard's first European goal sealed a comprehensive victory for Jose Mourinho's men.

Former Old Trafford favourite Robin van Persie received a standing ovation when found the net on 83 minutes, but it was mere consolation for Fenerbahce as United warmed up for Sunday's trip to Chelsea in style.

Wayne Rooney returned to captain United for the first time since September's EFL Cup win at Northampton as Mourinho made seven changes to the side fielded in Monday's goalless draw at Liverpool.

There were familiar faces in the Fenerbahce coached by former Sunderland Dick Advocaat. Van Persie returned to Old Trafford 16 months after leaving the club while former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel was handed a start.



After a lethargic opening half-hour, in which Martial should have headed United in front on 25 minutes, the game swung in the hosts' favour with two penalties in quick succession.

The first came after Michael Carrick - starting only his third game of the season - picked out Juan Mata in the opposition area with an inch-perfect pass, and the Spaniard drew a foul from Simon Kjaer.

Surprisingly Rooney, who has just one goal to his name this season, allowed Pogba to take set-piece duties, and the Frenchman clinically converted after a suspect run-up.



After Mata's exquisite pass released Martial through on goal and drew a foul from Sener Ozbayrakli, the Frenchman made it two, finding the same spot as Pogba had low to the 'keeper's right.

Fenerbahce had the chance to reduce the arrears immediately but David de Gea was on hand to thwart Souza's low drive - and two quickly became three as United cut loose with the goal of the game.

Rooney won possession high up field and showed great vision to pick out Lingard in the area, whose first touch to control was sublime.

He then laid the ball into the path of Pogba, who caressed an unstoppable effort into the top right-hand corner in first-half stoppage-time.

United carried on from where they left off after the break as Pogba and Rooney combined to set up Lingard, whose struck low to Volkan Demirel's right for United's fourth.

The introduction of Emmanuel Emenike saw Fenerbahce begin to threaten, and Van Persie's whistling effort on the hour ensured complacency would not set in for the hosts.

Mata should have grabbed a fifth but Demirel was a match his 78th-minute strike, setting the stage for Van Persie to have the final word.



The Dutchman escaped his marker and turned Emenike's cross beyond De Gea seven minutes from time.

All four sides of the ground stood to applaud the former United striker, and he showed his appreciation in return, but the night belonged to the home side.

Inter 1-0 Southampton: Southampton punished as clinical Candreva wins it for Inter

Antonio Candreva's fine finish saw a 10-man Inter Milan claim a fortunate Europa League victory over Southampton at the San Siro.

The English visitors were the better side for large portions of Thursday's game, with Jay Rodriguez having a shot cleared off the line in the first half and Virgil van Dijk and Charlie Austin both being denied late on.

Inter offered no attacking threat whatsoever prior to the half-time interval, but improved marginally after the break and took the lead when Candreva picked out the top corner with a terrific effort on the turn from a low cross that the Saints failed to cut out.

It was the Milan club's only shot on target in the entire match and a brief revival after taking the lead in the 68th minute came to an end just 10 minutes later when Marcelo Brozovic was sent for an early bath after his second yellow-card challenge of the game.

The Saints threw everything at the 10-man Inter defence late on, but Van Dijk and Austin both shot straight at goalkeeper Samir Handanovic with efforts from point-blank range, and Claude Puel's side were left to rue what might have been.

It was Southampton who dominated the first half, threatening early on with pace down the left as both Long and Rodriguez looked to exploit Inter's high-line defence.

The English side's dominance yielded its first great chance on 28 minutes when Rodriguez - so recently returned from his extended injury absence - managed to scramble a shot beyond the goalkeeper, only to see his dribbling effort hacked off the line.

A James Ward-Prowse effort fizzed narrowly over the bar moments later and Southampton's dominance continued for much of the rest of the first half.

A Cuco Martina low cross into the box had slightly too much pace on it for a Saints team-mate to reach, while a glancing header from Long perfectly bisected the tiny gap between the far post and a lunging Rodriguez in arguably the best chance before the break.

The away side continued to dominate after the break, but Inter had upped the pace slightly prior to taking the lead through Candreva's wonderful finish and threatened far more after the goal.

That Inter revival was short-lived, however, as a sloppy challenge by Brozovic earned the midfielder a second booking.

Southampton pushed very hard for an equaliser that they richly deserved, but a combination of poor finishing and an inspired goalkeeping display ensured that Inter took all three points to breathe new life into Group K.

國米上半場射門奇少，40分鐘，艾達馬田斯的射門斜出，已算較具威脅，但換邊後，球隊開始有起色，伊卡迪早段有次禁區內窄角度勁射中網側後，戰至67分鐘終於破悶局，由簡達華（Antonio Candreva）接應大衛辛頓地波傳中，撞射死角入網。

修咸頓下半場不是沒有攻勢，尤其換入查理柯士甸後，供應目標更明確，而國米77分鐘有波索域兩黃一紅被逐，一度令形勢緊張。離完場前，修咸頓有兩個黃金機會扳平，包括柯士甸近射被漢丹洛域救出，最終國米力保1:0至完場，終於在此組打開勝利之門，但仍暫居末席。

至於同組的布拉格斯巴達，作客1:0小勝比亞斯華夏普爾，暫時以6分升上榜首。
