Joe Cole has become the first big name signing of the summer, but have Liverpool made a good decision in taking him to Anfield?Good signingCole is just the tonic flagging Liverpool needed ahead of the new season. Not only will his ability to turn a game in a single moment be welcomed by Roy Hodgson, but his arrival at Anfield will surely boost Liverpool's hopes of keeping Fernando Torres at the club.
Torres can only benefit from the service that Cole provides, either from a central position or from wide on the left, while Cole himself provides a goal threat from midfield - look no further than what he did at Old Trafford last season for proof.
Cole may not have played much last season but Hodgson's faith in his ability clearly outweighs his high wages demands. And considering he arrives on Merseyside for nothing, Liverpool could well have just sealed the best deal of the summer. (Mike Hytner)
Bad signingLiverpool fans maybe salivating at the prospect of Joe Cole strutting his stuff at Anfield but they have to remember that they're essentially signing a cast-off from the champions of England.
Chelsea were the club that watched him every day in training last season, they are the club that hold all his medical records and know just how damaged his suspect knee is, and they were the club that decided that he was not worth £90,000 a-week.
Liverpool, a club not exactly swimming in cash, have taken a big gamble on a player who, while undoubtedly skilful, has the stench of damaged goods about him.
Not wanted by Chelsea, not used by England, Cole has to prove his worth before anyone should starting hailing him as a great signing. (Sean Fay)
