Arsenal remain in talks with Sampdoria over the proposed £22million transfer of Lucas Torreira.

The 22-year-old Uruguay international has emerged as a preferred option for Unai Emery who wants a defensive midfielder brought in as part of his summer recruitment plan.

Torreira has a buy out clause but it's understood Arsenal may need to pay in instalments as they look to make the most of their relatively limited budget this window.

Massimo Ferrero, the Sampdoria president said: 'Lucas Torreira has a release clause. Everyone knows it. Whoever wants to take Torreira will have to work with that release clause; ?25m.'

Arsenal have signed Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free and have agreed a deal worth around £16m with Borussia Dortmund for Sokratis Papastathopoulos which is expected to be confirmed next month.

They also have an interest in Sporting Lisbon winger Gelson Martins and have discussed a potential bid for Caglar Soyuncu at Freiburg.

Arsenal are in talks with Sampdoria for midfielder Lucas Torreira and an agreement is close, according to Sky Italy.

The Gunners are believed to have offered £26.5m (?30m) in instalments for the 22-year-old, rather than agreeing to pay his £22m (?25m) release clause in one lump sum.

Torreira broke into the Uruguay squad this year and is currently with the national team as they prepare for the World Cup.

Sampdoria-Arsenal, agreement reached for Torreira: the latest

After establishing himself in Serie A, Lucas Torreira will very likely take his talents to the Premier League.
Arsenal have in fact reached an agreement with Sampdoria on a transfer fee of ?30 million,
Emery’s club was willing to pay slightly more than Torreira’s exit clause in exchange of spreading out the payments over multiple years rather than paying in a single installment.
The agreement on the player’s wages will be subsequently reached with Torreira’s agent Bentancur.

Sampdoria are already at work to find Torreira’s replacement.
