Tottenham Hotspur Plot £20m Swoop For Atletico Madrid Striker Diego Forlan - Report
Tottenham Hotspur are looking to boost their strikeforce ahead of their inaugural Champions League campaign next season by lining up a £20 million bid for Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan, according to a report from The Daily Star. The 31-year-old, currently preparing for the World Cup with the Uruguay team, has Champions League experience with both his current club and former employers Manchester United.
Whilst he helped Atletico to Europa League glory, scoring goals against Liverpool in the semi-final and Fulham in the final, Forlan will not have the opportunity of playing Champions League football next season with the Mattress Makers.
Atletico must sell players due to the lack of Champions League action and have apparently decided that Forlan can be sacrificed as they look to hang onto Sergio Aguero.
The report claims that the Spanish side originally placed a £30 million price tag on Forlan's head, but Spurs indicated that they were not prepared to pay that much.
Marseille are also believed to be monitoring him, but they might struggle to match his £60,000 a week wages. His agent, Daniel Bolotnicoff, intimated that there was interest in the player from around Europe.
"Forlan is a player who a lot of people are interested about in the European market," he said.
"Each of the seasons many clubs show interest in him. This is not the first time that a Premier League club have wanted to try to buy him back."At the moment, though, he is concentrating on the World Cup finals."
