Barcelona director general Joan Oliver has confirmed that his side are locked in talks with Arsenal over midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

The Spain international has been tipped to return to the Camp Nou, which he left at the age of 16 to pursue his career with the north London outfit.

Joan Oliver confirmed this morning that Barcelona have launched a "formal negotiation process" with Arsenal with a view to signing Fabregas.

"We had already made some approaches to Arsenal, but yesterday, June 1, coinciding with the opening of the transfer window, we presented a serious, firm and written offer," he said.

"Everyone knows the player has expressed his wish to play for Barca and the club want him to come, but there is a third actor, which is Arsenal. And any agreement will depend on Arsenal's will."

The Catalan club have declared they will not pay over the odds for Fabregas, who is contracted to the Gunners until 2015.

Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger wants to have Dmytro Chygrynskiy included in Barcelona's offer for Cesc Fabreas, news daily Sport claims.

The Ukraine international joined Barcelona from Shakhtar Donetsk for ?25 million last summer, but a series of disappointing performances have relegated him to the periphery at the Camp Nou.

Chygrynskiy is the fifth choice centre-back in the Blaugrana's pecking order, and with his situation unlikely to improve next season, the 23-year-old is assessing his options.

Barcelona have so far been unable to reach a compromise with Arsenal regarding a transfer fee for Fabregas, and after Yaya Toure rejected the thought of moving to the north London club, Wenger is now keeping Chygrynskiy under the microscope.

The arrival of Chygrynskiy at the Emirates would certainly provide a considerable boost to Arsenal's defensive sector, which suffered the loss of Kolo Toure to Manchester City last summer.

Arsenal Football Club have today released the following statement about Cesc Fabregas:

"Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas is under contract with the Club until the summer of 2015. He is a highly-valued member of the team and part of our future plans.

"We have followed recent speculation linking Cesc with a move away from the Club but as there has never been any official approach for him, only two informal exchanges, in which we made it abundantly clear that we have no interest in transferring Cesc, we have refrained from publicly passing comment. However, yesterday evening we received an offer from Barcelona for Cesc and in response, we immediately and resolutely told them once again that we have no intention of selling our captain.

"To be clear, we will not make any kind of counterproposal or enter into any discussion. Barcelona have publicly stated that they will respect our position and we expect that they will keep their word."
