Kuwait City: Al Ittihad rallied to defeat AFC Cup defending champions Kuwait Sports Club 5-4 on penalties after regular time in the round of 16 match finished 1-1 on Wednesday.
The home side opened the scoring after 29 minutes through Brazilian striker Careca (Rodrigo Vergilio) before Al Ittihad levelled the scores with 17 minutes remaining through Moutaz Kailoni and the Syrians then prevailed in the penalty shootout after neither side could find a winner in extra time.
The hosts should have opened the scoring in the 22nd minute but veteran striker Abdullah saw his shot from distance fly wide of the right post.
It was no surprise when they finally managed to break the deadlock seven minutes later when Careca received a long pass from the back and charged into the area before driving a powerful shot beyond the right of keeper Khaled Al Haji Othman and into the back of the net.
Al Ittihad made a good start to the second half and nearly levelled the scores after 53 minutes when Wael Ayan's shot was pushed away by Musab Al Kandari for a corner, from which Salah Chahrour drove a shot over the bar.
But Kuwait SC were quick to regain their composure as Abdullah led a quick attack before sending a pass to Rogerinho (Rogério de Assis Silva Coutinho) whose shot was tipped over the crossbar by Al Ittihad goalkeeper Al Haji Othman.
An equaliser seemed only a matter of time and it duly arrived after 73 minutes through Kailoni, who struck a powerful free kick from 40 yards that landed in the back of the net, much to the surprise of Kuwait SC goalkeeper Al Kandari.
The visitors almost took the lead nine minutes later but a close-range header by Otobong Ene Edet was well saved by Al Kandari.
The game went to extra time where again the two sides could not be separated and Jarah Al Ateeqi's penalty hit the left upright to send Al Ittihad through to quarter-finals at the expense of the defending champions.
