Manchester United in rush to sign Porto's Diogo Dalot - sources

MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester United are trying to tie up a deal for Diogo Dalot before a release clause in the Porto defender's contract kicks in, sources have told ESPN FC.

United are in talks with the Portuguese side to sign the 19-year-old full-back.

A clause in Dalot's contract will allow the Portugal Under-21 international to leave for ?20 million from June 1.

But with a host of Europe's top clubs chasing the teenager, who has only made eight senior appearances, sources have told ESPN FC that United are prepared to offer a higher fee to convince Porto to sell before the clause is activated.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Bayern Munich and Barcelona are among the clubs interested.

Jose Mourinho has targeted Dalot, who can play at right-back and left-back, as he looks to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new season.

Regular full-backs Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young are both approaching their 33rd birthdays while Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind could leave Old Trafford this summer.

Sources have told ESPN FC that, as well as Dalot, United are also keen to sign Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred and Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld before the World Cup kicks off next month while there remains interest in Chelsea winger Willian.

Mourinho has also been linked with a move for West Ham striker Marko Arnautovic and the United manager was in the stands to watch the 29-year-old -- who played under Mourinho at Inter Milan -- feature for Austria against World Cup hosts Russia in Innsbruck on Wednesday night.

Man Utd are interested in signing Porto defender Diogo Dalot but there remains a sticking point over the fee.

Manchester United could end up paying more than Diogo Dalot’s minimum release clause to sign the Porto defender - but are ‘close’ to finding a breakthrough, according to sources close to the player.

The 19-year-old has a £17.5m release clause in his contract, which can be activated from June 30, and MEN Sport understands eight clubs are willing to pay even more than that amount to win the race to sign the full-back before then.

It is understood the sticking point in Dalot’s prospective move to United is the transfer fee, but around £19m could yet be enough to seal the deal.

As a result, talks have not yet reached the stage where terms and contract length have been discussed with the player - although this is expected to be straightforward.

MEN Sport understands Dalot has not yet flown to Manchester but the deal is 'close'.

"Nobody wants to activate a release clause, nobody ever does," a source close to the player told MEN Sport. "The release clause must be activated by the player so the club has to give the money to the player and the player has to pay taxes on that money.

"The club has to pay more to compensate the player and so on. Besides, the clause can only be activated on June 30 and Manchester United wants to make sure they secure the player before that because several other clubs are willing to pay ?20m plus.

"Paying more in a normal transfer fee is less than what they would have to spend if the player activates the clause."

Dalot made just eight appearances for Porto's first team in his breakthrough season - which ended in title glory. The Portuguese is currently recovering from a knee injury but will be fit for the start of pre-season.

Diogo Dalot will have a medical at Manchester United this week ahead of move from FC Porto, according to Sky sources.

Jose Mourinho has been in the market for a right-back and looks set to land Dalot after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee for the 19-year-old.

Dalot, who is understood to have a ?20m (£17.4m) release clause in his contract, made his first-team Porto debut in February, and is now set to leave the Estadio Dragao to link up with compatriot and former Porto boss Mourinho.

The defender played out of position for Porto at left-back in the Champions League knockout stages against Liverpool earlier this season.

He is a product of Porto's academy and won the U17 Euros with Portugal in 2016.
