Newcastle United have held discussions with South Korea skipper Ki Sung-yueng. The midfielder could join United on a free transfer after leaving relegated Swansea City at the end of his contract with the Liberty Stadium club. United are yet to place a single cash bid for a permanent summer signing, but held talks with the midfielder following South Korea’s World Cup exit. The player has had a medical at United and, if all goes well, will arrive on a free transfer. The 29-year-old had been linked with Everton but the Magpies hope that they can lure the former Celtic and Sunderland man as their second summer arrival after goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
Having played twice at the World Cup finals for South Korea in games against Sweden and Mexico the player would bring plenty of experience to Rafa Benitez’s squad for next season.
The one-time FC Seoul player operates in the holding role as his primary position but can push further upfield if needed.
After leaving Swansea - following five seasons in Wales - he said: “I’m really frustrated and disappointed.
“I believe Swansea will come back stronger and find the philosophy of the club for the fans.”
Swansea paid Celtic £6million for his services back in 2012 before he went on to play for Sunderland on a loan deal in the 2013/14 campaign.
