Knicks sign veteran guard Baron Davis

GREENBURGH, N.Y. (AP)—The New York Knicks have signed point guard Baron Davis, adding another piece to their backcourt.

Davis joined the Knicks after the Cleveland Cavaliers waived him last week and designated him as their amnesty player so his salary wouldn’t count against their cap figure. The Knicks were looking to fortify their backcourt, where they are slated to start third-year Toney Douglas and second-year player Landry Fields.

It’s unknown when Davis can play after sitting out all of preseason thus far with a back injury.

Davis played in 58 games last season, averaging 13.1 points and 6.7 assists for the Clippers and Cavaliers. The two-time All-Star has averaged 16.5 points and 7.3 assists since being drafted by the Charlotte Hornets with the No. 3 overall pick in the 1999 draft.

WASHINGTON (AP)—Free agent Nick Young has signed a one-year contract to return to the Washington Wizards.

The shooting guard led Washington in scoring last season with a career-high 17.4 points per game, more than doubling the 8.6 he averaged in the 2009-10 season.

His NBA career average is 10.9 points since being drafted in the first round by the Wizards in 2007.

Young’s new contract was announced Monday, a day before Washington’s second and last exhibition game, at the Philadelphia 76ers. In the Wizards’ preseason opener, they had all sorts of problems on offense, making only 33 percent of their shots in a 103-78 loss to Philadelphia.

Chuck Hayes is No Longer a Sacramento King

In shocking news for Sacramento Kings fans, recent free agent signee Chuck Hayes is no longer a member of the team. Hayes was signed by Sacramento to a four year, $21 million contract on the opening day of free agency.

It was later announced that Hayes was undergoing further tests after abnormalities were found during an echo stress exam. The news was shocking because the team had just signed Hayes. A heart condition can be potentially serious and is a frightening injury as well. Fans and the team were initially optimistic that the condition was minor and he would return to the court soon.

The team announced on December 19 that Hayes' contract had been voided because he had failed his physical exam.

This is big news for the Sacramento Kings with the season set to begin in less than a week. Sacramento opens on December 26 against the Los Angeles Lakers. Hayes was expected to be in the starting lineup at center alongside DeMarcus Cousins. The team will not have to scramble to add another big man before the season begins.

An option for the team will be to bring back free agent center Samuel Dalembert. Dalembert has yet to sign with a team and is still available. The move to void Hayes' contract also means Sacramento will move back below the minimum salary floor in the new labor agreement. This means that even if the team is content with Jason Thompson and JJ Hickson, they will need to add another player

As a fan, I hope that the heart condition is not serious and will not affect Hayes' basketball career. I was excited about the signing by Sacramento because he was just the type of player the team needed. At this point, it would be best to try and lure Dalembert back on a one-year contract. The team badly needs more veteran players to assume a leadership role for the upcoming season. It's time for Geoff Petrie and his staff to begin scrambling for another big man. Hopefully they can find someone still available out there that can contribute to the team this season.

Spurs make it official: No McDyess

The Spurs had until the end of business Monday to guarantee the other half of veteran big man Antonio McDyess’ $5.2 million contract, but they won’t drag the process to the end of the day.

The teams acknowledged that McDyess won’t be back, and the club will get to remove $2.6 million, the non=guaranteed portion of his contract, off its player payroll for the 2011-12 season.

McDyess, a former All-Star and an Olympic gold medal winner i n 2000, started all six playoff games last season. After the Game 6 loss in Memphis that ended the playoff run of the No. 1 seeded team in the Western Conference he made it clear to the Express-News that he intended to retire after 16 seasons.

“This was not at all how I wanted it to end, but signing here was one of the best things I did in my career,” he said then. “I wouldn’t trade these two years for the world, one of the greatest times of my whole career. I just wish we would have gone farther.”

The Spurs had hoped the shortened post-lockout season might enable them to talk McDyess into playing the final season on his contract, but officially gave up the quest on Monday afternoon.
