West Ham were knocked out of the Europa League third qualifying stage after a 4-3 aggregate defeat by Astra Giurgiu, losing 2-1 on the night in Romania.

Manuel Lanzini scored on his debut for the visitors early on, but Constantin Budescu scored twice in five minutes before the break to put Astra 2-1 up on the night and 4-3 on aggregate.

Astra came close to wrapping the tie up several times in the second half, hitting the post and forcing Darren Randolph into two saves, and held on to end West Ham’s European campaign, which started on July 2.  

West Ham, who made 11 changes from last week’s 2-2 draw at Upton Park, needed to score in Romania, and got the opener after just three minutes.

Lanzini, making his competitive debut for the Hammers, found the bottom corner from just inside the area as the ball broke to him after a melee in the six-yard box.



West Ham never settled, however, and the hosts nearly got level just moments later after Randolph misjudged Budescu’s deep free-kick, the right-hand post coming to the goalkeeper’s rescue.

But Budescu got his goal on 32 minutes, his low drive from 20 yards finding the bottom corner after Lanzini lost possession in midfield.

The striker then grabbed his sixth goal of the season four minutes later, slotting home coolly from 12 yards after a cut-back from the left, putting Astra ahead on the night and in the tie.

The hosts had more chances to see the game off in the second half; Fernando Boldrin getting ahead of his man only to blaze over from six yards, before Denis Alibec forced Randolph into a fine save.

Alibec then hit the post from an angle as Astra hit West Ham on the break several times late on, and despite some late pressure, West Ham could not find their equalising goal, ending their chances of reaching the Europa League first round stage for the first time since 2006.

Vitesse 0-2 Southampton: 5-0 aggregate victory as Saints cruise

Southampton booked a spot in Friday’s Europa League play-off round draw after a 2-0 win at Vitesse Arnhem sealed a 5-0 aggregate success.

With Ronald Koeman confined to his seat on the bench after injuring himself training with his players, the Saints rarely gave him cause for concern, as Graziano Pelle’s neat turn and finish settled any early nerves in the GelreDome.

The rest of the match was a mere procession, as Saints sat back and soaked up pressure from the Eredivisie side, before Saido Mane made sure of the win late on.

The good news kept coming for the travelling Saints fan, despite their clashes with police earlier in the day, with Jay Rodriguez returning to competitive action for the first time in 16 months.

Reports of crowd trouble outside the stadium failed to unsettle the Saints, with Koeman naming a strong side despite the 3-0 scoreline from the first leg.

And after just four minutes, the Premier League side put the tie beyond doubt, as Pelle, who has a great record against Vitesse, picked up the loose ball from James Ward-Prowse, swivelled and drilled the ball into the bottom corner.

Vitesse’s side boasted two Chelsea loanees, Izzy Brown and Lewis Baker, but neither could influence proceedings.



Mane was lively in the first 45 minutes, and could have doubled the visitors lead, but scuffed an effort from a good position straight at the goalkeeper.

It was more of the same after the break, with Saints happy to take their foot off the gas.

Rodriguez’s introduction, replacing Pelle, brought a rapturous applause from the Saints contingent, and he looked lively in his first outing since rupturing knee ligaments at Manchester City 16 months ago.

The former Burnley hitman almost made an instant impact, firing a dipping and swerving long-range effort at goal, but it flew just over.

However, Southampton did put the icing on the cake late on as Mane capitalised on an error from another Chelsea loanee Danilo Pantic to race clear and slot home to net a deserved second.
