West Brom join Aston Villa in race to sign John Terry

West Brom have begun talks to sign former Chelsea captain John Terry, Sky sources understand.

Tony Pulis confirmed his interest in bringing the ex-England skipper to The Hawthorns earlier this year, and has now joined a battle with local rivals Aston Villa to land the 36-year-old.

Sky sources reported on Monday that Villa were keen on Terry and the Championship club's manager Steve Bruce held informal talks with him over a round of golf over the weekend.

Terry is believed to be open to the idea of moving to Villa Park but he also has options with Premier League sides and is confident he can still perform at the highest level.

His wages, however, are expected to be an issue for both Villa and the Baggies.

Centre-back Terry made an emotional farewell to Chelsea last month after a distinguished 22-year spell at Stamford Bridge, which will officially end at the termination of his contract on June 30.

He was a peripheral figure in terms of playing time during his final campaign with the Blues but has made it clear that he wants to continue his career.

Terry said after the final Premier League game of the season against Sunderland: "Every ex-player says the same - play as long as you can and treasure every minute. I want to play."

BLUES OFFER FOR TERRY

Birmingham City manager Harry Redknapp has announced the club have made a contract offer to former England skipper John Terry, who will be a free agent from July 1.

Having spent his whole career with Chelsea, the centre-back ended his 22-year stay at Stamford Bridge at the conclusion of last season.

"I'd love to have him at the football club," Redknapp told talkSPORT. "He's a fantastic captain and great leader.

"We've made him a good offer and we have done the best we can. It's up to John now, but we would love him at Birmingham."

Aston Villa make concrete offer to John Terry

Aston Villa have stepped up their bid to sign John Terry by making a concrete offer to the former England captain.

Villa are making a serious play for Terry and have now submitted a contract proposal which is being considered by the 36-year-old, who is a free agent after leaving Chelsea.

Telegraph Sport understands Terry has over ten "realistic" offers from clubs around the world but Villa have taken a significant step forward in the last 24 hours. Bournemouth, West Brom, Swansea, Birmingham and clubs in China and the MLS are all battling to sign Terry, who is likely to make a decision within the next fortnight.

But Terry is refusing to close the door on extending his career in the unlikely surroundings of the Championship, with Villa's offer understood to be lucrative and loaded with bonuses and incentives that could take the terms over £4million a year.

Other offers and counter-offers are expected to be made in the next few days as the race hots up.  Terry did hint at retirement during his tearful farewell at Stamford Bridge in May but he is determined to continue playing.
