Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling will not be leaving the club in the summer despite a breakdown in talks over a new deal, says manager Brendan Rodgers.
The 20-year-old told BBC Sport he is motivated by trophies not money after rejecting a £100,000-a-week contract.
"Liverpool are one of the superpowers of football and if the owners don't want to sell, they don't have to," insisted Rodgers.
Sterling has two years left on a contract worth £35,000 a week.
Rodgers added: "Concentration should be on his football. If his ambition is to win trophies that's aligned with what we do here."
The Liverpool boss added that the club had not given him permission to BBC Sport and that he thought it was a "mistake" to carry out the interview.
"There was no permission from us," he said. "He will learn. We all make mistakes in life, especially when we are young.
"I think the kid has tried to put off all talk about contract and money. For now hopefully the focus will be on football."

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will speak to Raheem Sterling after the forward was pictured apparently taking nitrous oxide.
Images published by The Sun  appear to show the England forward passing out after taking the legal substance, commonly known as laughing gas.
Sterling scored in Liverpool's 2-0 win over Newcastle at Anfield on Monday.
"Internally we always look after these type of things," said Rodgers. "I will speak with him and we will move on."
Nitrous oxide is often used in surgery and dentistry for its anaesthetic effects.
The incident comes at a time when Sterling, 20, is at the centre of attention regarding contract talks with Liverpool.
He admitted he had rejected a £100,000-a-week deal in a recent interview with the BBC.
The Sunday Mirror  published pictures of the player allegedly smoking a shisha-pipe over the weekend.
Speaking on Sky Sports, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher admitted he made mistakes as a young player, but added: "Raheem needs to be on the back pages, not the front pages."

傳史達寧決心走人 勢買斷最後一年合約




英國傳媒報道，與利物浦的續約風波一直未解決的史達寧，有可能會買斷他的最後一年合約，而紅軍或無奈要接受大幅降低的轉會費以將他出售。《每日郵報》指出，史達寧與紅軍的合約在2017年屆滿，根據規定，他有權買斷自己最後一年的合約，以他目前35,000萬周薪，意味他可以支付170萬鎊買斷一年合約離隊。

較早前，史達寧拒絕了利記開出的100,000鎊周薪新約，令不少球隊對他虎視眈眈，雖然領隊羅渣士表示史達寧是非賣品，但這名身價高達5,000萬鎊的20歲英格蘭球員若只剩一年合約，轉會費肯定會大幅下降甚至減半，紅軍肯定要重新考慮他們的立場了。
