Philip Wollscheid: Stoke to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender



Stoke City are set to complete the loan signing of Germany international defender Philipp Wollscheid from Bayer Leverkusen until the end of the season.

Wollscheid, 25, has recently been on loan at Mainz in Germany's second tier, but Stoke have "agreed the terms of a deal," according to boss Mark Hughes.

A 6ft 3in centre-back, Wollscheid played twice for Germany in 2013 and is likely to finalise the move next week.

"He has superb quality and is a very good footballer," said Hughes, 51.

"He has moved for decent money in the past and he has played for the reigning world champions, so he has real good pedigree," added the Stoke manager after his side's FA Cup win over Wrexham.

Wollscheid joined Leverkusen in 2012 and made 51 league appearances as well as four in last season's Champions League before moving out on loan.

He will join club captain Ryan Shawcross, Marc Muniesa, Mark Wilson and Robert Huth as central-defensive options for Stoke, who sit 11th in the Premier League.

Transfer news: Stoke City close on Bayer Leverkusen defender Philipp Wollscheid

Mark Hughes is confident Bayer Leverkusen defender Philipp Wollscheid will join Stoke City on loan this week.

Stoke have agreed terms with Bayer and the City manager expects the centre-half to bolster his squad as he looks to push on into the top half of the table.

Hughes told the club website: "It is a deal that is likely to happen and we are likely to see him here early next week I would suggest.

"He has superb quality and in my opinion he is a very good footballer, so we are very pleased to have agreed the terms of the deal.

"He has moved for decent money in the past and he has played for the reigning world champions, so he has real good pedigree."

Wollscheid joined Leverkusen in 2012 and made 51 Bundesliga appearances, including four in last season's Champions League campaign. The 6ft3in centre-back also featured twice for Germany in 2013.

Germany and Bayer Leverkusen defender Philipp Wollscheid is set to sign for Stoke City, according to Sky sources.

The 25-year-old centre-half has played twice for Germany and was linked with several English clubs last summer, but remained in the Bundesliga on loan at Mainz and played five times.

It would be the first signing in the January transfer window for Stoke boss Mark Hughes.

Sky Sports News reporter Rob Dorsett told Sky Sports News HQ: "I understand he's had significant discussions with Stoke City and they hope to complete the deal in the next 24 hours.

"He's 6ft 5in so is a big presence. It would initially be a loan deal with a view to a permanent deal. He's had two caps for the German national team so Germany think highly of him."

Stoke have had a reasonable first half of the Premier League season and are currently sitting in 11th spot.

Stoke sign Philipp Wollscheid on three-year contract

Stoke have signed Philipp Wollscheid on a permanent deal following his successful loan spell with the club.

The defender joined City on loan from Bayer Leverkusen in January and helped secure a top-10 Premier League finish, making 14 appearances in all.

Stoke agreed an option for a permanent transfer at the time of the loan, and they have now taken up that option, signing Wollscheid on a three-year deal from July 1.

City chief executive Tony Scholes told the club's website: "We're delighted to have secured Philipp's services on a permanent basis. He joined us midway through the season but wasted little time in making a big impression.

"Within days of arriving in England he made his debut against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium and went on to become an important member of Mark's squad.

"He's clearly enjoying life in England; he feels very settled here and had no hesitation in committing his long-term future to Stoke City."
