Transfer news: Saido Berahino could be sold if big offer is made, say West Brom



West Brom technical director Terry Burton has hinted the Baggies could sell Saido Berahino in January - if a bid of £20million comes in.

Burton has left the door open for the striker's exit this month but insisted Albion would not allow their star to leave on the cheap.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for the nine-goal hitman, but Press Association Sport report the Baggies have not held talks with the Reds.

Burton insisted new head coach Tony Pulis would have the final say in any transfer deals but could grant a move for Berahino if it was best for the club.

"Tony will do and work whatever way is best for the football club.

He tries to win football matches and if he needs to sell somebody to do something else he will sell them," said Burton, who confirmed Albion have put contract negotiations with Berahino on hold.

"He will do whatever is best to get results for the club and that could involve any aspect of the policy. Whatever he wants we will work our hardest to make happen. Tony is in total charge."

But Burton insisted Albion would not sell the England Under-21 international for less than £20million.

"I don't think he (Pulis) would take that small amount of money," he said.

"He is worth what some club would pay for him. If a club want a player bad enough and they are top quality players and if they have the finances they try and do that."

Pulis was unveiled at The Hawthorns on Friday, after replacing Alan Irvine, ahead of his first game in charge against Gateshead in the FA Cup on Saturday.

He has been out of work since leaving Crystal Palace in August after saving them from relegation last term.

Pulis took over at Selhurst Park in November 2013 when Palace were second bottom of the Barclays Premier League with seven points from 12 games.

The Eagles had been written off but he guided them to 11th before leaving after a disagreement over transfer policy.

Albion are 17th in the table, a point above the drop zone, and Pulis underlined the difficulty of the job.

"This is the shortest period of time I've had at any football club to turn results around. That's why I think it will be as difficult, if not more difficult, than Palace," he said.

"I knew exactly where we were at Palace after two months. I hope we can get that instant reaction and go on to win games but it will be really tough.

"If you look at the bottom 12 here, it's never been tighter. You look at what Burnley, Leicester and QPR have done. They've had good results and will be fighting right through to the end."

In-demand West Brom striker Saido Berahino will be sold in the January transfer window if the Premier League strugglers receive a bid in excess of £20million, Sky sources understand.

Talks regarding a new contract at the Hawthorns for the 21-year-old were temporarily put on hold before Christmas, and Baggies technical director Terry Burton says that the final decision on Berahino’s future will now rest in the hands of new head coach Tony Pulis.

However, it is believed that West Brom have not as yet had any offers for the England Under-21 international, whose contract runs until the summer of 2017.

Both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked in recent weeks with Berahino, who has scored eight goals in 20 Premier League games this season.

But while it is thought the Merseysiders remain interested in the diminutive forward, the Gunners have distanced themselves from the player of late.

And with Berahino having netted four times in West Brom’s 7-0 thrashing of Gateshead in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, there is a feeling that Pulis now wants the player to stay at the club and aid their fight against relegation between now and the end of the campaign.

There has been a lot of talk already during this transfer window about a possible exit for Saido Berahino to Liverpool or Tottenham from West Brom, with reports suggesting a bid of over £20million would be required to prize the forward away from the Hawthorns.

Sky sources indicate, however, that the asking price is actually between £12m and £15m, which will undoubtedly bring in several interested parties.

Striker Saido Berahino could be sold if West Brom are offered the 'right deal' according to Baggies boss Tony Pulis.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a move to Liverpool or Tottenham.

"Everyone is available in every shape and form and there's no difference about that," said Pulis, who insisted he did not want to sell Berahino.

Pulis cited Liverpool selling to Barcelona for £75m in July, saying that the move happened because "it was the right deal for the club".

"We've had no offers for Saido, he is scoring goals and has been a pleasure to work with," the Welshman added.

In December, West Brom dismissed reports of a £23m move to Liverpool for Berahino as an "entire fabrication".

Berahino, has scored 13 goals in 24 games this season, but refused to celebrate any of his four goals in the 7-0 win over Gateshead in the FA Cup on Saturday.

He later claimed that his reaction was because he was "acting professionally" and "handling business".

Berahino signed a new three-and-half year deal, worth around £20,000 a week, with West Brom in November 2013. Talks over an improved and extended deal began in November, but have not produced an agreement.

He is due to appear before magistrates on 19 January on charges of drink-driving, an offence that carries a maximum penalty of up to six months in prison, a £5,000 fine and a driving ban of at least one year.

Saido Berahino has refused to rule out leaving West Brom during the January transfer window.

The 21-year-old scored his 14th goal of the season to give the Baggies a 1-0 win over Hull, a result that lifts West Brom two points outside of the relegation zone.

The in-demand striker has regularly been linked with a move away from the Hawthorns, but remained non-committal when asked about his future.

“I’m playing, I can’t complain,” Berahino said. “I’m starting to score goals again, which I’m enjoying. That’s as far as it goes.

"Obviously I’ve got big ambitions, but at the moment I’m a West Brom player and I’m enjoying my football.

"There are always rumours going around, but I can’t control anything. The only thing I can control is what I do on the field."

The England U21 international squandered two first-half chances before scoring the match winner in the 78th minute, driling home Anichebe's indirect free-kick inside of the area.

“It’s just one of those decisions where you have to think quickly and today I just smashed it," Berahino added. "It’s impossible to try finesse from there.

"It’s brilliant that we got the clean sheet, as we’ve been conceding soft goals, so credit to the team for putting that hard work in not to concede."

Victory gave Tony Pulis a winning start in the Premier League as West Brom manager, in what was only the Baggies' fifth win of the season.

Berahino is contracted at the club until the summer of 2017, and Pulis was keen to reiterate his desire to keep his top-scorer.                                                                                         
“You can’t say no because if someone comes in with an absolutely stupid offer then you look ridiculous by saying no,” Pulis said. “But I’d absolutely delighted if the kid stays.

“What we need to do is to add to that position and three or four other positions, to have a real run at staying at this league. “

Saido Berahino: West Brom striker not for sale, says chairman

West Brom and England Under-21 striker Saido Berahino is not for sale, chairman Jeremy Peace has reiterated.

The 21-year-old, who has scored 14 goals in 26 appearances this season, has been linked with a move to Premier League rivals Liverpool and Tottenham.

In December, West Brom dismissed reports of a £23m move to the Reds for Berahino as an "entire fabrication".

"I said in the autumn that the club had no interest in selling Saido and that remains the case," Peace said.

"If manager Tony Pulis decides otherwise, Berahino is too important to us to consider trading."

Berahino recently pleaded guilty to drink-driving charges and was banned from driving for a year and fined £3,400.

The club chairman, in reaction, added: "I wanted to take this opportunity to clarify the position and the club's thinking to our supporters now that Saido can put this unhappy chapter behind him."
