Callum McManaman: Wigan turn down West Bromwich Albion bid



Championship side Wigan Athletic have turned down a bid in the region of £4m from West Bromwich Albion for winger Callum McManaman.

The 23-year-old is the Latics joint top scorer this season with five goals in his 22 appearances so far.

The former Everton trainee is contracted to the club until 2017.

"It would take an awful lot of money for Callum to leave Wigan - that would be a board decision," manager Malky Mackay told BBC Sport.

Former Stoke and Crystal Palace boss Tony Pulis took over at West Brom at the start of the year and is still looking to make his first signing.

Huyton-born McManaman joined Wigan in 2007 after being released by Everton and had a loan spell at Blackpool before his first-team breakthrough at the DW Stadium.

He was named man of the match when the Latics beat Manchester City in the 2013 FA Cup final.

Transfer news: Wigan 'turn down improved West Brom offer for Callum McManaman'



Wigan Athletic are set to reject an improved offer of more than £4million for Callum McManaman from West Brom, according to Sky sources.

Albion had made an initial offer of £3.5m for the 23-year-old midfielder, which was turned down by the Sky Bet Championship side on Tuesday.

After Monday’s 0-0 draw with Everton, manager Tony Pulis said he had put in bids for “three or four players”, claiming: "You put them in and see what the clubs want.

"It's not just (McManaman), there's three or four other people we've asked and enquired about. Then we'll take a view about value for money and what is right for us."

McManaman, part of Wigan's 2013 FA Cup winning side, is contracted to the club until 2017.

West Brom head coach Tony Pulis says he has not given up hope of signing Wigan winger Callum McManaman.

And Pulis also says he will be quite happy if record signing Brown Ideye is still at the club when the window closes, despite his struggles in the top flight so far.

The Baggies have put in a second bid for McMananman after an initial offer was turned down but it is believed that this bid will also be rejected.

However, Pulis said: “It is going on, along with two or three others.

"We are exploring the situation to see if we can bring him in. We need to decide if it's a good deal for us or not and it has to be right for everyone.

"The clubs have to agree but it's got to be right for the player as well.”

It has also been suggested that Albion may be looking to offload Ideye, who has scored just one Premier League goal since his £10m summer transfer from Dynamo Kiev.

Pulis said: “At this present moment, Brownie is still here.

"If he's still here when the window closes that's fine, because he's been very good behind the scenes.

"He's trained well and his attitude has been first class.

"He's not without talent. The problem is we've needed him to score a goal and he hasn't scored a goal."

Silvestre Varela has joined Parma, after the Baggies ended his loan from Porto, and Sebastian Blanco and Georgios Samaras are both set to depart the club as well.

But Pulis is not sure if he will be able to replace all of them and said: “We will see. If that's the case (that the trio are not all replaced) I'll have to get on with it and that's the way I've always done it.

"I'll be hoping to bring players in and the club is hoping we can bring players in, so we will be working very hard over the next 10 days.

"The chairman will ask me if it's value for money or not but I don't get involved in the wages."

West Brom are close to completing a deal to sign Callum McManaman from Wigan according to Sky sources.

The Baggies have been determined to sign the 23-year-old midfielder for some time during the current transfer window and had a second bid of £4million turned down by the Lancashire club last week.

Tony Pulis confirmed that talks were continuing in his press conference ahead of Saturday's FA Cup fourth round victory over local rivals Birmingham, and it now appears they have reached an agreement.

Pulis said on Thursday: “It is going on, along with two or three others. We are exploring the situation to see if we can bring him in.

"We need to decide if it's a good deal for us or not and it has to be right for everyone. The clubs have to agree but it's got to be right for the player as well.”

McManaman, a former England U-20 international, has also been the subject of interest from Hull City, having scored five times in 23 appearances for Wigan, who are struggling in the lower reaches of the Championship.

The winger is a former Everton trainee who signed for Wigan in 2009 and has since made over 100 appearances for the club, many of which were in the Premier League prior to their relegation in 2013.

West Brom are close to agreeing a deal with Wigan for midfielder Callum McManaman.

We understand a fee will be in the region of £4m to £5m. Personal terms are being negotiated today and, if agreed, McManaman will sign a three-and-a-half year contract at the Hawthorns.

McManaman has agreed a three-and-a-half-year contract and will cost Albion between £4m and £5m if the transfer from Wigan goes through.

The 23-year-old, who has made more than 100 appearances for Wigan, has also been linked with Hull City this month.

But Tony Pulis has won the race for an England U21 international he hopes will bring width and pace to West Brom's attacking play.

Transfer news: West Brom complete signing of Callum McManaman from Wigan

West Brom have completed the signing of Callum McManaman from Wigan for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old attacking player has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the option of a further 12 months and becomes Tony Pulis' first signing at Albion.

"I’m delighted we’ve got Callum and I believe he will be an exciting addition to our numbers,” Pulis told the club website.

"Callum is a player who can improve our options and I am really looking forward to working with him."

McManaman leaves Wigan almost five years - and one FA Cup winners' medal - since making his first-team debut as a teenager.

He said: "I'm really made up to have joined. When the chance came to move to West Bromwich Albion, and return to the Premier League, I couldn't turn it down.

"This is a great move for me and I hope the Albion fans will get to see the best of me. Albion are a great club, with a good tradition. I can't wait to get going."

McManaman's departure comes on the same day Wigan sold midfielder Adam Forshaw to Middlesbrough.

Manager Malky Mackay said: "Callum is a fantastic talent and again we found ourselves in a position of having to make a decision regarding a major player in our squad.

"There’s been a lot of interest in Callum over the last few weeks, but I have made it clear that we need a squad of hungry players who are 100 per cent focused and committed to the job here.

"There comes a point where you have to do what’s best in terms of the player progressing in his career and what is financially the most beneficial for the club."
