Chelsea to take part in International Champions Cup

Chelsea will be among a group of elite football clubs taking part in this summer’s International Champions Cup in North America.

The Blues are among 10 teams signed up to take part in the tournament, with each of our matches shown live on Chelsea TV (UK and Ireland only).

Fixture details and locations will be announced on April 28 at a tournament press conference in New York, but a list of participating teams from across Europe, Mexico and the USA is below:

Chelsea Chairman Bruce Buck said: ‘I am delighted the club will take part in the International Champions Cup this summer, against top-quality opposition.

‘We look forward to returning to North America for the eighth time in 12 years, and visiting some iconic venues in which I am sure there will be strong Chelsea support.

‘We know the facilities we use will be second to none and Jose and the squad will be able to prepare for what already promises to be an exciting 2015/16 campaign. I am also pleased to confirm we will be continuing the important work of the Chelsea Foundation during our visit.’

As with all our Here to Play, Here to Stay pre-season trips, Foundation coaches will accompany the squad, organising a series of community projects as part of our commitment to grass roots football development in the region.

he 2015 International Champions Cup is the third International Champions Cup, or ICC, a series of friendly association football tournaments.
It is the first to be played separately in Australia, China, the United States.
The Australian edition of the tournament will feature three teams playing a total of three matches at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on July 18, 21 and 24, 2015. Real Madrid were the first club to announce their involvement.
Manchester City and Roma were later confirmed to take part in the Australian tournament.
The Chinese edition of the tournament will feature three teams playing a total of three matches in Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Shanghai.
The United States edition of the tournament will feature 10 teams but some games will be played outside the United States in Mexico, Canada, Italy and England.
Each team involved in the US edition will play four games, except the three United States-based teams that will only play two games.
2014 International Champions Cup champions Manchester United were the first team to confirm their involvement in the US edition.

We host the Viola in our last match of the tournament on Wednesday 5 August, after returning from America where we play three games against New York Red Bulls, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

Morgan Schneiderlin: Man Utd player scores in friendly win

Morgan Schneiderlin scored five minutes into his first Manchester United appearance as they beat Mexican side Club America 1-0 in Seattle.
New signings Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay and Matteo Darmian were all involved from the start.
Bastian Schweinsteiger was one of 11 United changes for the second half.
Schneiderlin's goal was decisive in a drab game, the £25m signing from Southampton meeting Juan Mata's far-post cross with a looping header.
One Direction did a concert at the CenturyLink Field on Wednesday. Parts of the pitch were painted green and the whole surface was heavily watered prior to kick-off.
After the game, United boss Louis van Gaal said: "It was not good. It was difficult. The first surface is artificial and natural grass over. It is always moving. You can get more and more injuries.
"It was a big concern. That is the difference in the USA. In American football that kind of stuff is more important.
In England we have Old Trafford and it is only for football. No One Direction entertainment. But in England we live for football.
Here they live for American football, baseball and basketball. It is different."



Club America's fans in a crowd of 46,857 provided a colourful backdrop to the game, a section of them in the top tier banging out a repetitive drum beat whilst others twirled yellow and blue umbrellas above their heads on a still and dry night.
Playing in a number 10 role behind captain Wayne Rooney, Depay flitted in and out of the contest and was on the end of a late tackle by Rubens Sambueza that earned the Club America captain a booking.
Darmian was rescued by goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who rushed out to clear after Miguel Samudio had lost his marker.
Marouane Fellaini was the only senior player to miss out as goalkeeper David De Gea, a Real Madrid target, and winger Antonio Valencia were absent with injuries described as minor by their club.
United play the second match of their US tour against MLS side San Jose Earthquakes at 04:00 BST on Wednesday.

Rafa Benítez starts life at Real Madrid with penalty defeat to Roma

Rafa Benítez began his tenure as Real Madrid manager with a frustrating 7-6 shootout defeat to Roma in a pre-season friendly.
With the match ending goalless in front of a crowd of 80,746 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the International Champions Cup match was decided by spot kicks and the former Barcelona player Seydou Keita slotted the winner after a miss by Lucas Vázquez.

Roma had the better first-half chances and were denied an opener after three minutes when Daniele De Rossi hit the crossbar with a right-footed shot from the centre of the box.
Gareth Bale fired over the bar three minutes later before Sergio Ramos, wearing the captain’s armband after the recent departure of the long-serving goalkeeper Iker Casillas, also chipped over from a corner kick in the ninth minute.

Casillas’s replacement in goal, the Costa Rica international Keylor Navas, was forced to make a fine save in the 30th minute, leaping to his right to put a glove on a Salih Ucan volley after the Turkey player latched on to a corner kick from Totti at the far post.

Searching in vain for a first goal, Bale tried an audacious bicycle kick in the area after Ramos lobbed the ball in but the Welshman succeeded only in fouling Ashley Cole.
Bale rose again for a header eight minutes after the break but his effort flashed just right of the near post from a Ramos corner and he came off soon after.

Karim Benzema, who replaced Cristiano Ronaldo at the break, then squandered a gilt-edged chance from the centre of the box after the hour-mark when his wild left-footed shot soared high and wide after a pinpoint cross from the Russian winger Denis Cheryshev.

The match ended in a flurry of shots, with Bale’s replacement Vázquez stepping inside a defender before being denied by a fine save from keeper Bogdan Lobont.

Raheem Sterling scores on his Manchester City debut



New Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling scored three minutes into his debut in a friendly against Roma at the MCG in Melbourne on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old, who joined City for £49m from Liverpool on 14 July, ran through on goal before finishing.
Sterling started on the left side of a front three that included David Silva and teenage forward Kelechi Iheanacho before being substituted at half-time.
Iheanacho also scored in a game City won 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
The game was City's first in the International Champions Cup tournament in which they face Real Madrid on Friday.



Sterling, who became the most expensive English player ever when he made the move from Liverpool to City, slipped on the ball after 49 seconds of the game and later had a strong call for a penalty turned down.
He appeared to be fouled inside the area by Alessandro Florenzi, but the referee waved play on.
Miralem Pjanic equalised for Roma with a stunning long-range strike before Iheanacho pounced on a poor Ashley Cole back pass to regain the lead for City early in the second half.
Roma's Adem Ljajic curled home a free-kick with three minutes remaining to take the game to penalties, where Joe Hart made two saves and also scored to give City the win.

Barcelona 2-1 LA Galaxy: Luis Suarez on scoresheet in tour opener victory

Luis Suarez picked up where he left off as Barcelona got their pre-season tour off to a successful start after a 2-1 win over LA Galaxy.

The Uruguayan, who was on target in Barcelona’s European Cup final victory over Juventus, opened the scoring in California, before Sergi Roberto made sure of the win.

Tommy Meyer scored late in second-half injury time for defending MLS champions Galaxy, but it was a comfortable start to their treble defence from the Catalan giants.

In front of 93,226 fans - the biggest crowd for a club soccer game involving an MLS team in US history - Steven Gerrard’s second appearance in a Galaxy shirt never really got going.

Barcelona pressed relentlessly from the start in their first pre-season friendly in preparation for the defence of the La Liga, Copa Del Rey and Champions League trophies they won last season.

They were finally rewarded in the 45th minute when Suarez fired a left-footed shot past Galaxy keeper Brian Rowe after Rafinha's deflected cross was moved on by Marc Bartra and Galaxy defender Leonardo was unable to clear the danger.

Both teams made wholesale changes at the break, with Suarez among the seven Barcelona players to depart and Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique entering the game.

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena made five half-time substitutions, with Gerrard and Robbie Keane among those departing.

The changes didn't slow Barca, with Douglas going close in the 47th minute and Pique testing substitute Galaxy keeper Andrew Wolverton in the 53rd after a pass from Munir.

Munir also helped set up Roberto's 56th-minute strike from the edge of the box, which was clinically dispatched by the Spaniard.

The minority of Galaxy fans in the stands had little to cheer for much of the match, although Meyer grabbed a consolation goal in the first minute of injury time, heading in from close range.

Barcelona next travel up the coast to take on Manchester United on Saturday at Levi's Stadium, home of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers.

Man Utd 3-1 San Jose: Memphis Depay off the mark as United cruise

Memphis Depay opened his account as Manchester United secured their second successive pre-season win with a 3-1 victory against San Jose in California.

Depay capitalised on a first-half error to score his first goal for the club after Juan Mata’s cross-cum-shot had put Louis van Gaal's side deservedly in front.

Fatai Alashe pulled one back against the run of play before half-time, but Andreas Pereira made sure of the win for a much-changed United after the break.

Barcelona, who beat LA Galaxy, are the next opponents on Saturday, before a final match of the tour in Chicago against Paris Saint-Germain.

United - watched from the stands by former boss Sir Alex Ferguson - had a host of chances early on, but failed to find the back of net with any of them.

Summer signing Depay twisted and turned on the edge of the box before seeing a powerful strike well saved, with Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata unable to convert the rebound.

Rooney again failed to connect from a good position before United’s pressure told and Mata somewhat inadvertently gave United the lead with 32 minutes on the clock.

Picked out by the energetic Luke Shaw, Mata seemed to be aiming for the outstretched leg of Depay, but the ball evaded everyone and found its way into the net.

Soon it was two, as Depay this time definitely got the final touch, reacting to an awful backpass before slotting home on 37.

United looked to be cruising into the break with a two-goal lead, but after Morgan Schneiderlin was caught out on the touchline, Alashe (42) beat Phil Jones to the ball to put San Jose in with a chance.

Ten changes - goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, in for injured David de Gea, the only survivor - meant a young-looking United took time to adapt after the restart.

But, playing in a No 10 role, Brazilian youngster Pereira made sure of the result with a towering header from a Jesse Lingard cross in the 61st minute.

The hosts had some late pressure but it proved in vain as the 20-time top flight champions showed their 2015/16 season preparations are gathering pace.

New York Red Bulls 4-2 Chelsea: Poor defending sees Blues soundly beaten

Chelsea began preparations for their Premier League title defence with a surprise 4-2 defeat to New York Red Bulls in New Jersey.

After a tough opening 20 minutes of their opening US tour match, Chelsea took the lead thanks to a expertly-taken Loic Remy strike, and looked comfortable heading into the break.

However, some woeful defending saw the under-strength hosts turn the game right around with Franklin Castellanos, a Sean Davis double and Tyler Adams sending the home fans into a state of shock.

Eden Hazard’s fine goal was mere consolation as the Blues rearguard gave Jose Mourinho plenty of headaches ahead of Saturday’s clash with Paris Saint-Germain.
