Norwich 0-3 Manchester City: Sergio Aguero decisive in comfortable win

Sergio Aguero scored one and set up another as Manchester City cruised into the FA Cup fourth round with a 3-0 win over Norwich on Saturday.

Both sides made several changes to their starting line-ups at Carrow Road, but Aguero's selection proved decisive as he broke the deadlock before teeing up Kelechi Iheanacho to make it 2-0 before half-time.

Substitute Kevin De Bruyne completed a comfortable victory late on, as Norwich crashed out in round three for the third year running.

Aguero's season has been stifled by a series of niggling injuries, but this was his fourth consecutive start and he looked back to his scintillating best before going off with 21 minutes left.



City made seven changes as De Bruyne, Yaya Toure and David Silva were all rested, with the latter two not even included on the bench.

Their makeshift centre-back pairing of Nicolas Otamendi and Martin Demichelis continues to look uncertain but Norwich, who made seven changes themselves, never really put the duo to the test.

The hosts made a bright start but were guilty of overplaying at the back and when Sebastien Bassong took one risk too many, Iheanacho almost capitalised, as his angled shot was palmed over by John Ruddy.

Aguero was more clinical, giving City the lead in the 16th minute with a superb solo goal. It was a trademark weaving run from the Argentina striker, who collected Raheem Sterling's neat flick and ghosted past two Norwich defenders before finally evading the sliding challenge of Ryan Bennett and poking home his 11th goal of the season.

Norwich showed signs of life as Graham Dorrans tested Willy Caballero with a stinging drive from distance, but the hosts struggled for any sustained possession and when the second goal came, it went to the visitors.

Aguero was involved again, latching on to a long punt upfield and, as Norwich rushed across, squaring the ball for Iheanacho to double City's advantage.

The hosts may well have been relieved to hear the half-time whistle, but they came out with renewed vigour after the break and even had the ball in the net when Cameron Jerome applied a cool chip over Caballero, but the assistant referee had his flag up.

As the match wore on, however, any hopes of a comeback seemed to drain out of the Canaries and City almost bagged a third when Jesus Navas cracked a fizzing effort against the crossbar.

The respite proved temporary, however, as De Bruyne, shortly after coming on, weaved Bennett one way and then the other before driving his shot through Ruddy at the near post to complete a convincing victory.

Arsenal 3-1 Sunderland: FA Cup holders leave it late to reach fourth-round

Arsenal continued their love affair with the FA Cup as the holders came from behind to beat Sunderland 3-1 in the third round at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger's men - winners of the competition in 2014 and 2015 - left it late to beat relegation-threatened Sunderland with substitute Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud both scoring in the final 20 minutes.

With assist king Mesut Ozil rested, Arsenal needed someone to step into his boots and that man was Hector Bellerin, who created the final two goals from the right flank.

Jeremain Lens had given the visitors a shock lead before Joel Campbell hit back midway through the first half.

The Gunners have now not lost an FA Cup tie in 13 games, since Blackburn's 1-0 fifth round victory in February 2013.



Wenger spoke in his programme notes about "giving everything" to progress as far they can in the FA Cup this season and named a strong side that included Giroud, Laurent Koscienly and Petr Cech while 19-year-old Alex Iwobi was handed his first start as he replaced Ozil.

Young goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was one of eight changes for Sunderland to the team that beat Aston Villa 3-1.

Pickford, who impressed during the first half of the season on loan at Preston, might have expected to be busy on his senior debut for Sam Allardyce's men but it was the visitors that possessed the early spark.

They took a surprise lead on 17 minutes when Lens robbed Koscielny of the ball on the edge of his own area and the Dutchman spanked an effort from 15 yards past Cech at his near post.

Arsenal were lacking inspiration in the final third with Iwobi struggling with his final ball, until Campbell struck on 25 minutes.

Walcott skipped clear down the left and his cut back was curled into the bottom corner by Campbell - his third goal of the season.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlin posed a threat throughout the match with his direct running but it was a more cultured effort that brought to the Emirates to his feet on 56 minutes. He worked the ball onto his right foot and from 25 yards and whipped an effort at goal that cannoned back off the post.

With that piece of woodwork still shaking, Sunderland went up the other end and hammered Cech's crossbar. Steven Fletcher rose highest from eight yards and was so unlucky not to see his header from a DeAndre Yedlin cross hit the net.

Pickford then produced a brave save at the feet of Campbell before Fletcher again wasted another headed chance from close range after out-muscling Gabriel inside the area.



Wenger decided to throw on Ramsey with 35 minutes remaining - replacing Iwobi - and his impact was almost instant.

He started to dictate play in the midfield but it was his burst into the box on 72 minutes that turned the game on it's head as he netted Arsenal's second goal.

Bellerin created the chance with a wonderful burst of speed down the right flank and Ramsey showed his strikers instinct by turning home the cross.

The Spanish full-back was at it again minutes later as he produced a near carbon-copy run and cross that this time was forced home from close range by Giroud.

Two quick-fire punches thrown by the holders, and Sunderland had nothing more to give.

Aston Villa's winless run extended to 16 games as the Premier League's bottom club were held to a draw by League Two Wycombe Wanderers in the FA Cup third round.
Remi Garde looks certain to preside over Villa's relegation to the Championship - and both the manager and his players felt the fury of many travelling supporters at the final whistle, with captain Micah Richards involved in heated exchanges with fans at the end.
Richards gave Villa the lead after 22 minutes with a low right-foot shot but Wycombe, sixth in League Two and FA Cup semi-finalists in 2001, were level five minutes after half-time through Joe Jacobson's penalty.
Villa were furious referee Michael Oliver punished Ashley Westwood for his clash with Matt Bloomfield - and their frustration increased when Rudy Gestede's deflected late shot bounced off the bar.

Garde's wait goes on

Garde avoided the humiliation of defeat by League Two opposition - but he is still without a win 10 games after succeeding Tim Sherwood.
There will be an element of relief but also frustration that a decent first-half display did not bring more reward than Richards' goal.
It gave Wycombe hope and they cashed in with a contentious penalty from Jacobson - although the flailing arm of Westwood was asking for trouble.
Villa's failure to win simply confirms the deeper malaise at Villa Park, and the fact Garde has inherited a desperately poor squad that does not look like it has what it takes to mount the sort of miracle recovery they will need to stay in the Premier League.
Garde must now try to work the markets in January to put together an unlikely escape plan, but the fact not too many would have regarded a Wycombe win as a huge shock tells you just how dismal this Villa squad is



Wycombe enter FA Cup spirit

This was a day that had all the ingredients that make up a classic FA Cup cocktail - a Premier League side in crisis, a club 54 places below them on the ladder and a biblical storm hitting the ground before kick-off just to make conditions even more hazardous.
The League Two side were perfect hosts as the media descended on Buckinghamshire - in search of a shock, it must be admitted - as Adams Park was packed to its 9,000 capacity - one man interrupting walking his dog for a full 20 minutes during the first half to take in the action on a hill high behind one end of the ground.
As Wycombe's fans made their way around the steep hills and into the stadium, there was an anticipation that made this day the epitome of what still makes the FA Cup special.
The home side did not get the win they would have craved but they still earned a lucrative replay with a spirited second-half display and did themselves proud on and off the field.

Villa fans' mixed emotions

The 2,500 Villa fans who made the short journey down the M40 seem resigned to relegation this season as they are cut off at the bottom of the Premier League - but they retain some dark humour.
There was anger among their number as they sang "We want our Villa back" moments into the game, understandable with owner Randy Lerner having failed to sell the club and presided over a decline that looks certain to end in the Championship.
Chants of "You don't know what you're doing" came when Garde put Jordan Veretout on for Carles Gil after 71 minutes.

And there was hostility at the final whistle when fans sang "You're not fit to wear the shirt" in the direction of Villa's players as they trooped off.
There was also the sight of captain and goalscorer Richards in heated debate with disappointed fans at the final whistle. Villa is a club in freefall.
But there was humour, too, to sustain Villa's followers.
When a group of flag-bearing children walked behind the goal where Villa's supporters were gathered, they were greeted by chants of "Sign them up, sign them up" before breaking into an chorus of "We're down and we know we are".
Richards lifted the spirits with a first-half strike and, amid the celebrations, they sang "We've scored a goal" before taunting Wycombe fans for supporting a team actually losing to Villa.
In their defence, Villa's fans gave tremendous support to a team that is so clearly short of any serious quality, although a few expressed their hostility at the failure to beat lowly Wycombe when the final whistle sounded.
It appears they have decided it is better to laugh than cry at their plight.

Birmingham City 1-2 Bournemouth: Glenn Murray's last-gasp winner breaks Blues hearts

Glenn Murray's late winner spared Bournemouth's blushes as they survived a scare at Birmingham.

The substitute smashed home with five minutes left to seal a 2-1 win and send the Cherries into the FA Cup fourth round.

Their last visit to St Andrew's ended in an 8-0 victory on the way to promotion to the Premier League, but there was never any hint of a repeat scoreline.

Lee Tomlin's penalty cancelled out Michael Morrison's opener for the hosts and the visitors rode their luck in the second half.

James Vaughan missed a spot-kick for Birmingham and Jacques Maghoma hit a post, before Murray had the final say.

The Cherries made 11 changes and handed defender Jordan Lee his debut, while they also named Jordan Green on the bench, who was stacking supermarket shelves and playing for Banbury last summer.

Birmingham themselves made seven changes and started brightly as Andrew Shinnie skied over from six yards inside the first minute from Viv Solomon-Otabor's cross.

Shinnie was the hosts' greatest early influence, but the visitors began to exert some control, despite playing their second string.

First Shaun MacDonald's six-yard header struck the top of the bar on 20 minutes, before Adam Legzdins saved his follow up.

The midfielder then curled wide after a neat flick from Tomlin and Legzdins turned Marc Pugh's 25-yard drive wide.

Birmingham's threat had waned with Solomon-Otabor well shackled and Vaughan, back for the season on loan from Huddersfield, anonymous.

There was little sign of the opener, but the hosts took the lead five minutes before the break when Morrison headed in David Cotterill's precise free-kick.

It riled Bournemouth and they were level four minutes later from Tomlin's penalty, which left Blues furious.

Eunan O'Kane went down under Jonathan Grounds' challenge and referee Michael Jones gave the spot-kick - despite heated protests - which Tomlin lashed down the centre for his first goal for the club.

But Birmingham had their own chance from the spot after a quiet opening to the second half when Solomon-Otabor found Maikel Kieftenbeld and he was brought down by O'Kane on 59 minutes.

Birmingham-born Vaughan, who failed to score in six outings during his initial loan stay, took it, but blazed well over.

Before then MacDonald had driven over for Bournemouth, but the much-changed Cherries lacked tempo and fluency against their gritty hosts.

Birmingham grew in confidence, despite their penalty miss, and wasted a brilliant opening with 15 minutes left.

Baily Cargill was robbed in the area by Maghoma, who cut inside but could only curl a shot against a post with Adam Federici out of position.

The ricochet hit Shinnie and bounced off a post again, but the midfielder had already been flagged offside.

It was another massive let-off for the Cherries and they cashed in with five minutes left.

Steve Cook was given too much time on the right to swing in a cross and Legzdins managed to save O'Kane's header and Pugh's follow-up, only for Murray to win it from point-blank range.

The goalkeeper seemed to claim he had two hands on the ball, but he was almost beaten again three minutes later when Matt Ritchie's header bounced off a post as the Cherries edged through.

Doncaster 1-2 Stoke: Jonathan Walters puts Potters in next round of FA Cup

Jonathan Walters' second-half thunderbolt saw Stoke book their place in the FA Cup fourth round after surviving a torrid afternoon at League One Doncaster.

Walters blazed home a 57th-minute effort from long range moments after Peter Crouch had missed a glorious chance of his own to put the Potters back in front.

Crouch's 15th-minute opener had been cancelled out 10 minutes later by Nathan Tyson, and after Walters struck Rovers went agonisingly close to levelling again late on through Andy Butler and Tyson again.

But Stoke boss Mark Hughes will have been pleased with the performance of his fringe players after making nine changes to the side beaten by Liverpool in the Capital One Cup in midweek.

They restricted Rovers to few chances in the early stages, the hosts' best opportunity resulting in an easy save for Jakob Haugaard from an Andy Williams header.

And it was hardly surprising when the visitors took the lead on the quarter-hour mark, Crouch side-footing home after finding space in the box to meet Joselu's low cross from the right.

But Doncaster were level 10 minutes later when Williams launched himself on a brilliant run over the halfway line, swatting away a couple of challenges before squaring for Tyson, who prodded home at the second attempt.



Despite Rovers finishing the half well, Mame Biram Diouf missed two chances to put the visitors back in front, bringing a comfortable save out of Thorsten Stuckmann then taking too long shaping to shoot after Joselu fed him a glaring opportunity on the edge of the box.

Conor Grant went close to giving Doncaster the lead five minutes into the second half when he fired inches wide from a Cedric Evina cross.

But after referee Kevin Stroud shrugged off a penalty shout from Craig Alcock, the visitors set about making the home side pay for their missed opportunity.

First Diouf brought a fine save out of Stuckmann from close range before Crouch inexplicably spooned the point-blank rebound over the bar.

But moments later the former England striker's blushes were spared as Walters crashed home a stunning effort from around 25 yards to put the Premier League side back in front.

Stoke took control of the game after their second goal, soaking up brief spells of Doncaster pressure and going close to a third on the break when Walters slid in and missed at the far post.

But Doncaster went agonisingly close to equalising nine minutes from time when substitute Richard Chaplow found Butler whose well-placed header beat Haugaard but struck the woodwork.

And there was still time for two more Doncaster chances in injury time as first Tyson failed to keep his shot down then Paul Keegan headed inches over the bar.

Everton ease past Dagenham & Redbridge in FA Cup

Arouna Kone's first goal for two months and a late Kevin Mirallas penalty were enough for Everton to see off League Two strugglers Dagenham & Redbridge in the FA Cup third round.

The Ivorian converted a far-post header just past the half-hour before his team-mate converted from the spot but the 2-0 scoreline did not fully reflect the hosts' dominance in a match they controlled from the start.

Dagenham offered little threat with the appearance of a black and white cat in Everton's penalty area near the end causing more problems for goalkeeper Joel Robles - who tried unsuccessfully to catch it - than the visitors' attack.

Manager Roberto Martinez made eight changes from the side which beat Manchester City in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday but still fielded an experienced side.

Midfielder Steven Pienaar make his first appearance in nine months and captain Phil Jagielka return after being out since the end of October with a knee injury.

However, there was no place in the squad for Steven Naismith, which appeared to virtually confirm his imminent departure from Goodison Park in the transfer window with Norwich favourites to sign him.



Separated by 78 league places, it was not that much of a contest with centre-back Ramiro Funes Mori forcing Mark Cousins to tip over a fierce effort before the left-footed Bryan Oviedo, filling in at right-back, swung over the 32nd-minute free-kick for Kone to register his first goal since scoring a hat-trick against Sunderland on November 1.

Funes Mori departed with a badly-gashed head just before half-time, giving youngster Matthew Pennington only his second appearance for the club, but it did not affect Everton's progress.

Kone had three chances to put the result beyond doubt after the break, seeing one low shot parried by Cousins, then failing to get enough of a touch to Muhamed Besic's cross with the outside of his right foot before heading wide with 10 minutes remaining.

But when Nyron Nosworthy fouled Mirallas the Belgian converted the spot-kick to put the Toffees into the fourth round.

West Brom 2-2 Bristol City: James Morrison earns FA Cup replay

James Morrison spared West Brom's blushes with an injury-time equaliser against Bristol City as the FA Cup third round tie at The Hawthorns ended 2-2.

All the goals came in the second half as the Championship side came from behind to lead with goals from Jonathan Kodjia and Kieran Agard, after Saido Berahino had climbed off the bench to put Albion ahead.

City looked set for a famous victory but in the fifth minute of time added on, Morrison converted Callum McManaman's cross from close range to set up a replay.



West Brom made a lively start, with Stephane Sessegnon and James McClean both looking dangerous down the flanks. The final ball was lacking though, and it was to be the story of the first half for the Premier League team.

At the other end, Ben Foster, making his first appearance since March last year after recovering from a serious knee injury, looked as sharp as ever as he got down well to smother Joe Bryan's curling effort from the edge of the area.

West Brom's only effort on target of the first half came after 18 minutes. Chris Brunt's free-kick struck the defensive wall and McClean's shot from the rebound was parried away by Frank Fielding.

Albion worked a handful of other decent openings before half-time, with Sessegnon the architect, but a Bristol City body was always on hand to make a block.

Morrison, set up by Sessegnon, got a clear sight of goal just before the break but he steered his shot wide from 10 yards out.

Teenage goalkeeper Max O'Leary began the second half for the visitors, making his senior debut for the Championship club - with Fielding seemingly injured.

O'Leary was beaten straight away as McClean headed Salomon Rondon's cross goalwards but Nathan Baker, on loan from West Brom's neighbours Aston Villa, rescued the 19-year-old with a header to clear the ball off the line.

The start of the second half was a much more lively spectacle with chances at both ends - the most notable coming when Kodjia lobbed just over Foster but into the side-netting before the hour mark.



Baggies boss Tony Pulis made a triple substitution in the 63rd minute, bringing on McManaman, Craig Dawson and Berahino. McClean, Chester and Rickie Lambert made way.

The changes took just four minutes to take effect as Berahino opened the scoring, curling a low shot off the greasy surface and into the bottom corner beyond O'Leary's dive.

The in-demand striker, Pulis said this week he thinks as many as five clubs are interested in signing Berahino, celebrated by running over to the touchline to shake his manager's hand.

However, City were level in the 74th minute as some slack marking allowed Kodjia to head home Luke Freeman's free-kick from inside the six-yard box.

That was Kodjia's final contribution as he made way for Agard 10 minutes later - and it proved to be an inspired change by Bristol boss Steve Cotterill.

Foster made a superb one-handed save to keep out Freeman's shot but Agard, barely on the pitch a minute, reacted quickest to squeeze home the rebound.

However, another twist remained and Morrison pounced to break the visitors' hearts.

Southampton 1-2 Crystal Palace: Wilfried Zaha nets winner for Eagles

Crystal Palace have progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory at struggling Southampton.

Goals in each half from Joel Ward and Wilfried Zaha were enough to secure a win against out-of-form opposition, whose only response came from Oriol Romeu.

Palace, largely inspired by former Southampton forward Jason Puncheon, scored the opening goal in the 29th minute. Puncheon dispossessed former team-mate Steven Davis in central midfield, dribbled from around the halfway line into the hosts' penalty area and squared to give Ward a routine finish from directly in front of goal.

Southampton's low confidence clearly began to further deteriorate, and manager Ronald Koeman unsurprisingly responded at half-time by introducing Dusan Tadic and Juanmi for Maya Yoshida and Davis, reverting from a back five to a four.

Their response was almost instant. When Sadio Mane tested Wayne Hennessey with a 51st-minute shot, Romeu reacted to the rebound, and from close range produced a routine finish to score the equaliser.

Playing with greater belief, the hosts appeared the more likely victors, until, in the 68th minute, Palace again took the lead and, in doing so, sealed victory.

Goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg could only parry Puncheon's shot to the lively Zaha, and from the centre of the area, the talented forward sent a powerful shot into the back of the net.

Again, Southampton's heads dropped. This time, however, a substitution did not change the game. Late on, Jose Fonte's header against the crossbar and Virgil van Dijk's header against the post were the closest they came to avoiding a third successive defeat.

Watford 1-0 Newcastle United: Troy Deeney strike sees off Magpies

Watford sealed their spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win against Newcastle at Vicarage Road.

Hornets skipper Troy Deeney capitalised on an error by Georginio Wijnaldum to score the only goal of the game shortly before the interval.

Newcastle, who have now lost their last five FA Cup third-round ties, enjoyed the better of the chances but failed to score for the fourth consecutive match.

Following a hectic festive period, Obbi Oulare was handed his Watford debut as Odion Ighalo, scorer of 14 goals this season, dropped to the bench in one of four changes made by Quique Sanchez Flores.

But despite battling for their Premier League survival, Newcastle boss Steve McClaren signalled his intent by fielding his strongest possible side. Kevin Mbabu was the only change, as he came in for the injured Jack Colback.

The visitors also reverted to a 3-5-2 formation in a bid to deal with Watford's strike duo of Deeney and Oulare. And for the opening 43 minutes, it worked.

Indeed, it was Newcastle, now winless in their last five outings, who enjoyed the best of the opening period.

Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes pulled off a fine stop from Daryl Janmaat with only eight minutes gone and the Brazilian was in action moments later as he blocked Wijnaldum's neat flick at his near post.

Ayoze Perez then missed a great opportunity to fire McClaren's side into the lead, when he screwed his shot wide following fine work on the right-hand side by Moussa Sissoko.

And with five minutes to go to the interval, Mbabu was allowed to coast into the Watford area before his left-footed effort was turned behind by Gomes.



Newcastle were on top but could not find the breakthrough, and somewhat inevitably, they were punished for failing to find the target.

With the interval fast approaching, a woefully misplaced backpass from Wijnaldum fell to Deeney and the Hornets skipper made no mistake as he rounded Rob Elliot before side-footing into an empty net to score his seventh of the season.

Newcastle headed into the interval staring at their fourth consecutive 1-0 defeat, and their luck failed to improve in the second half.

With 20 minutes to go, Sissoko cantered into the Watford area before teeing up substitute Florian Thauvin, but Gomes was equal to his shot. Thauvin was adjudged to have been offside, but it summed up the Magpies' afternoon.

Newcastle were roundly booed by their visiting support at the final whistle.

Manchester United 1-0 Sheffield United: Wayne Rooney scores injury-time penalty

Wayne Rooney's injury-time penalty gave Manchester United an uninspiring 1-0 win over Sheffield United in the FA Cup third round at Old Trafford.

The captain's spot kick, earned after Memphis Depay was brought down by Dean Hammond in the 93rd minute, came at the end of a game severely lacking in clear-cut opportunities.

Louis van Gaal's side had to wait until the 69th minute for their first shot on target, through Matteo Darmian, which was met with ironic cheers from the home crowd.



League One Sheffield United, 46 places below their opponents in the English football pyramid, had just one shot on target of their own.

The hosts had the majority of the possession in the first half, but had little in the way of cutting edge and failed to force a save out of Sheffield United goalkeeper George Long.

Their only half-chance of the opening 45 minutes came when Rooney rounded Long after a superb through ball from Darmian, but the England striker could not net from an acute angle eight yards out.

It meant Van Gaal's side went into the half-time break without a goal for the 10th match in a row at Old Trafford in all competitions.

The second half yielded much of the same, and when substitute Depay's amibitous shot from 25 yards ended up wide of Long's goal on 65 minutes, the home crowd ironically applauded.

Their reaction was the same two minutes later as Darmian's left-footed effort from inside the area fell into the arms of Long, and their best chance did not come until three minutes from time.

After Andreas Pereira's dangerous free-kick fell kindly to Anthony Martial on the penalty spot, the Frenchman's effort was superbly blocked by John Brayford inside the six-yard box.

But the hosts got their winner in stoppage time after Hammond's trailing leg brought down Depay on the left of the area after the Dutchman used his skill to get the better of the Sheffield United defender.

Rooney stepped up and sent Long the wrong way from 12 yards to send Manchester United into the fourth round, but questions will still be asked of their performance.

West Ham's Nikica Jelavic scores in 1-0 FA Cup win over Wolves

Nikica Jelavic scored an 84th-minute winner against Wolves to send West Ham through to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The former Everton striker, whose last goal came against the same opposition for Hull prior to his switch to Upton Park, struck with five minutes remaining to secure a hard-fought 1-0 win for the hosts.

Championship side Wolves arrived in east London without their 10-goal striker Benik Afobe who is expected to complete a £10million switch to Bournemouth over the weekend.

But they did bring with them a miserly defence which had not conceded a goal in their last three matches, and they looked set to earn a replay until Jelavic broke the deadlock.

West Ham survived an early scare when Rajiv van La Parra's cross fizzed across the goalmouth with no one able to apply the final touch, but they went on to dominate the first half without finding a way through.

They appealed for a penalty when Danny Batth blocked Aaron Cresswell's drive but referee Anthony Taylor was not convinced, before Pedro Obiang forced a sharp save from Carl Ikeme at his near post with a deflected shot.

Obiang's header was also kept out by the Wolves keeper and Michail Antonio miscued a close-range volley from Carl Jenkinson's cross.

The closest they came to scoring in the opening half was from the unlikely boot of right-back Jenkinson, who collected Mauro Zarate's square pass and let fly from 20 yards, with Ikeme tipping the ball over the crossbar.

Wolves showed more ambition at the start of the second half but their momentum was halted by a worrying mystery injury suffered by striker Bjorn Sigurdarson.

The Icelander, starting his first Wolves match in over two years, collapsed to his knees with no one around him and was given lengthy treatment before departing the field on a stretcher.

New signing Michal Zyro did manage to force a save from Hammers keeper Darren Randolph, while at the other end Obiang and Alex Song fired wide.

Hammers boss Slaven Bilic sent on the cavalry of Dimitri Payet and Andy Carroll with 25 minutes remaining, and French midfielder Payet immediately hit a free-kick on to the roof of the net.

But it was Carroll who played a big part in the winner, holding the the ball up on the edge of the area before feeding Jelavic, who crashed in a superb first-time shot which flew across Ikeme and into the corner of the net.

Chelsea 2-0 Scunthorpe United: Ruben Loftus-Cheek breaks his Blues duck

Ruben Loftus-Cheek scored his first goal for Chelsea as they beat Scunthorpe United 2-0 in the FA Cup third round at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Premier League champions led at half-time through Diego Costa's strike, his fourth in his last three games and eighth in total this season after a recent return to form in front of goal.

However, Scunthorpe will feel they should have been awarded a penalty early in the second half when Ramires appeared to bring down Kevin van Veen in the box, only for referee Craig Pawson to disagree.

And Chelsea sealed the win midway through the second half when substitute Loftus-Cheek, in his 11th Blues appearance, netted with his first-ever shot on target for the club.

The visitors were able to call upon leading goalscorer Paddy Madden after a recent hamstring problem, but new signing Conor Townsend was cup-tied for the trip to west London.

Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink, meanwhile, fielded a strong-looking line-up following the club's shock home defeat to Bradford City in the fourth round last season.



The Dutchman did, however, opt to leave captain John Terry on the substitutes' bench, while he was without playmaker Eden Hazard and strikers Radamel Falcao and Loic Remy through injury.

Chelsea did have one fit frontman available to call upon, and it was Costa who settled home nerves by breaking the deadlock after just 13 minutes.

Branislav Ivanovic made good ground down the right wing, before firing in a dangerous cross towards the waiting Costa in the six-yard box, with the ball somehow finding its way into the back of the net off a combination of the Spain international's shins and Scunthorpe left-back Scott Laird.

The home side then moved up a gear as they went in search of a quick second goal to kill off their stubborn opponents, and but for Scunthorpe No 1 Luke Daniels, they would have got it.

The visitors' goalkeeper made two brilliant stops to keep out long-range efforts from first Cesc Fabregas and then Pedro as the former ran the show in the opening 45 minutes.

However, with the scoreline only 1-0 at the break, Scunthorpe - 15th in League One and cheered on by 3,000 visiting fans - knew they were still in with a chance of causing an upset.

And the visitors will point to the moment eight minutes into the second period when Van Veen's driving run into the box was ended by Ramires' tackle from behind, a challenge that replays suggested should have conceded a penalty.

Mr Pawson, though, sided with Chelsea and a quarter of an hour later Scunthorpe found themselves 2-0 down after a lovely debut goal from Loftus-Cheek, on at half-time for Oscar.

The always willing Cesar Azpilicueta sprinted down the left wing before pulling the ball back for the waiting England U21 international, who made no mistake with a crisp side-footed finish past a helpless Daniels just days before his 20th birthday.

That, then, was effectively tie over, although Mark Robins' side did strike the bar with three minutes to go through Jordan Clarke's well-struck effort from the right-hand edge of the area.

Oxford 3-2 Swansea: Kemar Roofe the FA Cup hero

Two goals from Kemar Roofe helped Oxford United to a 3-2 victory over Premier League side Swansea City in the FA Cup third round.

The League Two outfit possessed plenty of quality in their play and came from behind to beat the Swans, who took the lead through Jefferson Montero.

A Liam Sercombe penalty got Oxford level just before half-time before Roofe took centre-stage with two well-taken goals.



Roofe has now scored 15 goals this season and has been previously linked with a £1.5m move to Newcastle United.

Bafetimbi Gomis gave Swansea hope late on but Oxford held on, meaning Swansea become the first Premier League team this season to be knocked out by lower league opposition.

Oxford came into the game losing just one of their last 16 games in all competitions and the side who are third in England's fourth-tier started very confidently.

Meanwhile, Swansea, who made 10 changes to the team that lost at Manchester United, looked fragile as Alan Curtis took charge of his first game since being officially appointed Swansea boss.

That said, Swansea were a threat going forward and Montero could have given them the lead a bit earlier than he did but he blazed over the bar from 10 yards after a clever pull back from Marvin Emnes.

Swans goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt had said before the game he wanted a quiet match between the sticks but he was busy from the outset, tipping away a Ryan Taylor header on 16 minutes.

Oxford were doing all the pressing, but fell behind on 22 minutes to a goal that was dripping with Premier League quality.

Montero jinked inside, played the ball to Emnes, who skilfully back-heeled the ball back to Montero. He took one touch and then cheekily flicked the ball with his heel into the bottom corner from eight yards.

Michael Appleton's team never lost their swagger though and both the lively Chris Maguire and Roofe tested Nordfeldt with a couple of forthright snapshots.

Swansea needed to get in and reorganise, but Oxford kept coming and won a penalty just on the stroke of half-time.

Kyle Bartley recklessly went to ground in the box and Maguire had the quickness of mind to shift the ball away and take the contact. Sercombe stepped up and thrashed the penalty down the middle.

Roofe then came alive.

He began his career with West Brom but failed to feature for the Premier League side, leading to loan spells at Víkingur Reykjavík, Northampton, Cheltenham, Colchester and Oxford, before joining the League Two team permanently in the summer.

Stepping in from the left-flank, he opened up his body and whipped a fantastic effort into the far corner from the edge of the area just after the break.

With the crowd now rocking at the Kassam Stadium, Roofe took his reputation to the next level by grabbing his second goal 10 minutes later.



Oxford broke quickly from a Swansea corner and Maguire slid in Roofe, who danced past the final Swansea defender and finished past Nordfeldt.

Although Swansea were becoming frustrated - picking up three bookings in the first 10 minutes of the second-half - they regained composure and got back into the game on 65 minutes.

Jack Cork picked out Gomis in acres of space in the box and the striker grabbed just his second goal in his last 16 games with a cool finish into the bottom corner.

The goal should have provided the platform for Swansea to build some forward momentum in the closing stages - but it never materialised.

Montero was denied by a brave Sam Slocombe save and Gomis had a shot blocked away by David Mullins, but Oxford always looked in control of their destiny ahead of Monday's fourth round draw.
