LIVERPOOL manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Sunderland have agreed a fee to sign Fabio Borini – but there is still work to do on the deal.

News broke last night that Sunderland had agreed a deal of up to £14m for the striker, who spent last season on loan with the Black Cats.

Borini has yet to agree personal terms with Sunderland, however, and was included in Liverpool’s starting line-up for their friendly against Preston today.

Rodgers said: “He obviously spent a really successful period with Sunderland last season and they’re a fantastic club.

“They’ve offered to buy Fabio and that’s where we’re at.

“There’s an agreement between the clubs but nothing agreed with the player as of yet so he’s still very much a Liverpool player.”

Transfer news: Sunderland agree fee with Liverpool for Fabio Borini

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has confirmed that the club have reached an agreement with Liverpool over the sale of striker Fabio Borini.

The 23-year-old spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light from Liverpool,

scoring 10 goals as Poyet's team reached the Capital One Cup final and defied the odds to stay in the Premier League.

Sky Sports sources understand the fee is in the region of £14m, with Sunderland now able to negotiate personal terms with the Italy international.

"We've agreed terms with Liverpool and we are waiting for the documents to be signed and then we'll move on from there," Poyet told Sky Sports News.

"Like any other deal you do, first you need to sort out the clubs and then you start working with the player

"I'm hoping we can have him because he knows how much it would mean for us to have a player like Fabio."

Liverpool did pick Borini, who was Brendan Rodgers' first signing as Liverpool manager, to start Saturday's pre-season friendly victory over Preston at Deepdale.

But Borini scored just two goals in 20 appearances during an injury-plagued first year at Anfield.

The former Chelsea youth was signed from Parma in the summer of 2012,

having impressed the previous season during a loan stint at Roma, where he scored nine goals in 24 appearances.

Sunderland transfer target Fabio Borini has joined Liverpool's pre-season tour of the United States.

A fee of around £14m has been agreed between the clubs for Borini, who spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light.

Gus Poyet said on Saturday he hoped to open talks with the 23-year-old striker, but Borini has travelled to the States in an apparent indication he intends to fight for a place at Anfield.

Liverpool have lost Luis Suarez from their attacking options, but Rickie Lambert has been recruited and Loic Remy could soon join him.

A bid of £8.5m triggered a release clause in Remy's QPR contract, and he now has permission to talk to last season's Premier League runners-up.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet is not frustrated that the club's transfer bid for Fabio Borini of Liverpool has still not gone through.

The Wearsiders claimed that they had agreed a fee of £14million for the 23-year-old, who scored 10 goals while on loan with them last season.

But Borini is with the Reds on their pre-season tour of the United States and is thought to be mulling over his options.

Poyet has added Jordi Gomez, Costel Pantilimon and Billy Jones to his squad so far this summer,

but had hoped to have brought more players  in ahead of a pre-season trip overseas.

"I don't think the word is 'frustration', I'm a normal manager that wants his players as soon as possible," the Uruguayan told Sky Sports.

"There are things that are very, very close but we cannot get it over the line so that brings a little nerves because you want the players.

"The idea was to take most of the squad to Portugal on Friday, but it's not going to be possible, and it changes the plans because it's going to be a totally different preparation.

Maybe we'll be surprised and sign three or four players on Wednesday or Thursday."

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has indicated that a move for Liverpool striker Fabio Borini could still be on after confirming talks between the two clubs.

Borini impressed during a season-long loan at the Stadium of Light last season, scoring 10 times,

and Poyet previously confirmed Sunderland had agreed terms over a reported £14million switch.

However, the 23-year-old cast doubt over the move

when he joined Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States and his agent claimed he was planning on staying at Anfield.

After starting in the Reds' 1-0 defeat by former club Roma,

Borini has since returned from America to receive treatment on a shoulder problem picked up in that game, which Poyet says has slowed the negotiations.

"He is being assessed now for his shoulder injury. That's stopped everything a little bit," Poyet is quoted in the Sunderland Echo.

"We will see. I have not held talks with him, but the club has, although that's private.

"We know where we stand."

but will not put a timescale on his attempts to bring the Liverpool striker back to Sunderland.

Borini scored 10 goals in 40 appearances on loan at Sunderland last season and played a key role in the club's run to the Capital One Cup final.

Sunderland agreed a reported £14million fee with Liverpool last month, but have yet to reach an agreement with the once-capped Italy international.

A shoulder injury suffered by Borini during Liverpool's pre-season tour of the United States has held up negotiations,

while there have also been reports that the 23-year-old wants to fight for his place at Anfield.

Poyet remains determined to sign Borini and is also targeting further additions to his squad after recruiting six players so far this summer.

"We're working on it," Poyet told Sky Sports News. "It's not easy, it's been a difficult summer, I think, for everybody.

"We are not finished. We need more bodies. We are looking for specific, quality players."

When asked if there is a timescale to conclude the Borini deal, Poyet said:

"If you asked me last week, I probably would have said this week, but I cannot tell you next week because we will wait for him.

"Of course, we need to do other business that is important for the team. I have a shape. You don't realise it, but we are 10 days away [from the start of the season]."
