Leicester City have opened negotiations with Argentina midfielder Esteban Cambiasso.
The 33-year-old is due to hold talks with manager Nigel Pearson who is keen to assess the player's fitness prior to agreeing terms.

Cambiasso is a free agent after leaving Inter Milan and has been in talks with Valencia, West Ham and Aston Villa.
However, he wants a two-year deal which will stretch Leicester's wage budget.
Cambiasso turns 34 later this month and would bring a wealth of experience to the King Power Stadium, with almost 500 senior club appearances and more than 50 caps for his country.

Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson has confirmed his interest in Argentina midfielder Esteban Cambiasso, but is furious the story has been leaked.
The 33-year-old left Inter Milan in the summer and has been linked with a move to the Premier League new boys.
Pearson told BBC Radio Leicester: "I am not going to say no, because we have [been interested].
"But what's disappointing is that some clown somewhere down the line has leaked information that is sensitive."
Pearson, who was speaking after the Foxes beat Werder Bremen 1-0 in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, said he was not sure if the player would be joining.
He added: "We like to try to do business in the right way and make sure all parties interests are looked after for the right reason.
"But for some reason, some balloon head has decided to leak it.
"We try to protect every party that is involved in doing deals because there will always be deals that cannot be done."
Cambiasso moved to Europe from his homeland in 2002, joining Real Madrid from River Plate.
He spent two season with the Spanish La Liga side before signing for Inter in 2004.

Transfer news: Leicester City still hopeful of deal to sign Esteban Cambiasso



Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson remains keen on bringing Argentina midfielder Esteban Cambiasso to the King Power Stadium.

Pearson says negotiations with the 33-year-old are ongoing as he prepares his side for their Premier League return against Everton on Saturday.

He had been hoping to keep any deal secret until an agreement could be reached but news of the potential signing was leaked last week to a national newspaper, much to his annoyance.

"I don't know about Cambiasso," said Pearson.

"I don't take too much notice of the air waves. I've not denied our interest. It's something we will continue to work at.

"Whether deals can be done or not it will be based on a number of criteria. We'll work really hard to do the deals. I can't account for other circumstances intervening.

"We have an interest yeah. But my view on talking on other people's players [is] I don't. I don't have a track record of talking about speculation."

Even without Cambiasso, Pearson is confident his squad will be able to thrive in the Premier League after running away with the Championship title last season.

"I think it's dangerous to set your targets too low," he said. "It's very difficult to have a definitive answer to what might constitute a successful season.

"From a business point of view - and purely on a business level - survival would be an achievement. But, of course, I can't preach that as that would be under-selling what we have the potential to do.

Leicester boss Nigel Pearson believes the club have a good chance of securing midfielder Esteban Cambiasso.

Pearson hopes the Argentina international will be signed before Leicester host Arsenal in the Premier League next Sunday.

Cambiasso recently left Inter Milan after 10 years at the San Siro, and the 34-year-old is one of three players on Leicester’s radar as the club look to strengthen following their return to the top-flight this season.

Pearson said: "Cambiasso is still a possibility. There's been progress over the weekend so I'm more hopeful than I was on Friday and Saturday but until there is a definitive answer I'm loath to talk too much.

“But I am hopeful it can be done in next couple of days.

"We've been trying to do business and it has not materialised so far. But hopefully this week we can still do business and bring players in we want to bring in.

"I recognise there is a need for added numbers and we have to do that in this window. There are subtle differences this year to last year.

"We've been very positive but it is nice to have different options.

"Two or three hopefully is the aim. It would be nice to be able to achieve that."
