Mauricio Pochettino: Tottenham appoint Southampton boss



Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager on a five-year deal.
The Argentine resigned from Southampton after 18 months with the club.
The 42-year-old becomes Tottenham's 10th manager since 2001 and replaces Tim Sherwood who was sacked on 13 May.
"This is a club with tremendous history and prestige and I am honoured to have been given this opportunity to be its head coach," Pochettino told the Spurs website.

Pochettino's assistant Jesus Perez, first team coach Miguel D'Agostino and goalkeeping coach Toni Jimenez have also left Southampton to join him at Spurs.
"There is an abundance of top-class talent at the club and I am looking forward to starting work with the squad," he added.
"Tottenham Hotspur has a huge following across the world and I have great admiration for the passion the fans show for this team.
"We are determined to give the supporters the kind of attacking football and success that we are all looking to achieve."

The former Espanyol boss took over at Southampton in January 2013, when he replaced Nigel Adkins, and led them to eighth place in the Premier League.
His future at St Mary's had been in question, following the departure of chairman Nicola Cortese in January.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said: "He has a proven ability to develop each player as an individual, whilst building great team spirit and a winning mentality."
Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger said: "We will be looking for a manager that shares our values, our principles and our philosophy; a manager who can continue to grow the first team."

The Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as our new Head Coach on a five-year contract.



Mauricio joins us from Southampton where he guided them to their highest-ever Premier League finish of eighth place last season.
During his 18 months at St Mary's, Mauricio also oversaw the progress of home-grown stars such as Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, James Ward-Prowse and Calum Chambers.
Mauricio built his coaching reputation in Spain with RCD Espanyol, winning admirers across Europe for his high pressing attacking brand of football
as well as for prioritising the development of young players from the side's youth setup before his departure in November, 2012 after almost four years in charge.
Mauricio enjoyed a highly successful playing career,
making his debut in 1988 with Argentinian side Newell's Old Boys at the age of 16 and winning the Argentine Primera Division with them in 1991.
Two spells at Espanyol followed from 1994, sandwiched between time with Paris Saint-Germain and Bordeaux.
He won two Copa del Rey titles with Espanyol and also earned 20 international caps with Argentina.

Commenting on the appointment Chairman Daniel Levy said:

The Southampton boss is expected to sign a ?3.6 million-per-year contract to take over at White Hart Lane

Tottenham are expected to appoint Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager this week, Goal can reveal.

The Southampton boss has been the favourite for the job since Tim Sherwood was sacked earlier in May and several talks have taken place with intermediaries.

A broad agreement over a salary package worth ?3.6 million per year is believed to have been reached a week ago.

As of Sunday night, no official approach is understood to have been made to Southampton

but the south-coast club are resigned to losing the 42-year-old and braced for Spurs to finally make an official move.

The north Londoners have sounded out other options, including Ajax coach Frank de Boer and Rafael Benitez of Napoli,

but club chairman Daniel Levy has been most impressed by Pochettino's philosophy.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti was never considered a realistic candidate and the Spanish giants' Champions League triumph

on Saturday night confirmed that the Italian will stay at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Louis van Gaal was initially Tottenham's top target but attention quickly turned to Pochettino once it became clear that the Dutchman was in line to take over at Manchester United.

Spurs' priority has been to find a coach who can get the most out of the existing squad with only a few summer changes after they spent ?130 million on new signings last year.

Pochettino's attacking style of football fits in with Levy's ideals while at Southampton he has also shown his ability to introduce and improve academy products.

The Saints finished eighth in the Premier League this season and Pochettino delayed talks over a new contract -

his existing deal has one year to run - in anticipation of an approach from White Hart Lane.

Tottenham are aware of the risks associated with a coach who has only taken charge of two mid-ranking clubs in Espanyol and Southampton

but the Londoners feel that the Argentine can handle the extra expectation.

Levy is also conscious that, in recent years, he has missed the opportunity to appoint Brendan Rodgers and Roberto Martinez,

who have both been highly praised this season following impressive campaigns on Merseyside.

Spurs sacked Andre Villas-Boas in December and then Sherwood at the end of a disappointing season in which they finished sixth and missed out on their target of a top-four finish.

Tottenham are understood to be satisfied with Pochettino's level of English - he has spoken the language to his Southampton players since his first day -

but will ask him to stop communicating via an interpreter in press conferences.

STATEMENT: First Team Manager resigns



Southampton Football Club has today accepted the resignation of First Team Manager Mauricio Pochettino,
and concluded negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur over his appointment as their new manager.

Assistant First Team Manager Jesus Perez, First Team Coach Miguel D’Agostino and First Team Goalkeeping Coach Toni Jimenez have joined Pochettino in departing St Mary’s.

Chairman Ralph Krueger commented: “The Club has been on a constant path of growth since the arrival of Markus Liebherr in 2009.

Tottenham to unveil Mauricio Pochettino as new manager after World Cup



Tottenham will not unveil new manager Mauricio Pochettino until the start of pre-season.

Pochettino was appointed as Tim Sherwood's successor on Tuesday, signing a five-year deal after resigning his post at Southampton.

Spurs will not consider holding a news conference until the start of July, when players who are not still involved in the World Cup will report back for training.

Pochettino's first pre-season with the club will include a tour of the United States, with Tottenham taking on three Major League Soccer sides.

They face the Seattle Sounders on July 19, Toronto FC four days later - when former Tottenham favourite Jermain Defoe could be in opposition - and the Chicago Fire on July 26.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is delighted to have brought Pochettino to White Hart Lane,

telling Sky Sports News' Jim White: "We narrowed it down to five candidates, though it was a very hard decision.

"But Mauricio came out on top. He came across incredibly well.

"He was extremely dignified. Now the hard work starts. We have all got to work together and make the club a better club.

"Also, we have a man who knows the right balance between experience and youth - in the new world of financial fair play, that's very important."
