Tim Cahill: Australian close to Melbourne City switch after leaving Hangzhou Greentown



Tim Cahill has left Chinese club Hangzhou Greentown, and could be set for Melbourne City FC.

Cahill, 36, joined Hangzhou in February and scored four goals in 16 appearances for the second-tier club.

The Australian made his name in English football, appearing more than 200 times for both Everton and Millwall.

David Gallop, the chief executive of the Football Federation of Australia, said it was "the right time" for Cahill to play in his home country.

Cahill, Australia's top scorer with 47 goals in 91 games, paid tribute to Hangzhou on Instagram, and revealed he had turned down an "amazing" contract offer to stay.

"This decision is based on me wanting to be with my family," he said. "The passion of the fans at every game, home and away, has been amazing and I've loved being part of it all."

The attacking midfielder started his career at Millwall, scoring 52 goals in 217 games.

Everton paid £1.5m for him in 2004, and he played 226 times for the club in the league, netting 56 times.

In February he described having his contract with Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua terminated as "heartbreaking", before joining Hangzhou a week later.

Gallop said on Thursday that "positive talks" had been held with Cahill about bringing him to Melbourne City.

And newly appointed head of the Australian League, Greg O'Rourke, said the move could help to grow the sport in the country.

"If you're bringing back the Tim Cahills of the world, they can really make a difference in the marketing of this league," he said.

Former Everton striker Tim Cahill is set to play in his domestic A-League for the first time after signing for Melbourne City FC.

The 36-year-old Australian, who spent eight successful seasons with the Toffees, has joined Melbourne City on a three-year contract from Chinese Super League club Hangzhou Greentown.            

Cahill is set to play for the first two years of his deal before joining the club's coaching staff in 2018.

Melbourne City, sister club of Manchester City, finished fourth in A-League last season before losing to Adelaide United in the finals series of the competition.


Football Federation Australia's CEO David Gallop welcomed the arrival of Cahill, who is the country's record goal scorer with 47 goals in 91 appearances for the Socceroos.

"It's the biggest player signing in the League's history, it's a red letter day for the code," Gallop said.

"I think for many Australians when you think football, you think Tim Cahill.

"Scoring goals, celebrating by punching the corner flag, hopefully we are going to see plenty of that over the next couple of seasons, not only in the A-League but of course for the Socceroos on the road to Russia 2018."

However, Gallop refused to reveal what price City had paid Hangzhou for the veteran striker.

"Without putting a precise figure on it, I think it's a significant investment by the game, the biggest investment that the league has ever made in a player and that is, I think, appropriate for Tim Cahill," Gallop said.

"As I say, he's number one on our wish list and we've got him."
