Newcastle United move to sign Mo Diame from Hull City after 'triggering release clause' Newcastle United today launched a dawn raid on Hull City to sign Wembley hero Mohamed Diame by triggering a release clause in his contract. Diame is said to be open to the opportunity of playing for The Magpies even though it would see the player dropping back into the Championship with relegated United. However, Diame is expected to be at training with City today despite the speculation over his future. The loss of Diame will be a major blow to City already reeling from the loss of manager Steve Bruce. Already struggling with injuries and a depleted squad, City, who have made no major signings, are also fighting off interest for other key players including Abel Hernandez, Andy Robertson and Harry Maguire. It is believed Diame had a release clause as low as £3m which could be triggered by interest from other clubs. City signed him from Wets Ham ahead of the 2014/15 season by triggering a release clause of £3.5m. In a poll for the Chronicle in Newcastle, 82% of Magpies' fans were supportive of signing Diame.
At City, Diame, 29, has always been regarded as a player with class and skill, he was nevertheless has been criticised for inconsistency for the Tigers and runs in form were interrupted by niggling injuries.
However, a strong run in City's push for
promotion - capped with a wonder goal to win the play-off final against Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley - ensured the attacking midfielder emerged from the season as a fans' favourite.
That run of good form attracted attention from rival clubs with Crystal Palace one of the clubs looking to sign the Senegal International.
Last season then manger Steve Bruce said he expected Diame to leave after relegation to the Championship but the player remained at Hull, providing City with an experienced midfield and attacking option with vast experience.
During his two-season career, Diame struggled at times with injury and racked up 58 appearances for City, scoring 14 goals.
Last week Diame told the Mail Bruce's departure had been a blow to the players. He said: "Everyone is really sad because the manager was an important person for us all.
"He looked after us like a father, to be honest, and to see him go is really sad.
"But we can't do anything to change what has happened, it is done now and all we can do is think about getting prepared for the new season because it is going to be really tough."
Diame is being seen by Newcastle and boss Rafa Benitez as a replacement for French international Moussa Sissoko who is expected to move to a major European club. The club are also expected to likely to sell defensive midfielder Cheick Tiote and winger Florian Thauvin.
