France striker Alexandre Lacazette snubs Newcastle after Lyon accept £22million bid- Alexandre Lacazette has turned down the chance to sign for Newcastle
- France striker is keen not to disrupt his preparations for the national side
- Toon boss Steve McClaren is desperate to sign another striker this January
Alexandre Lacazette has rejected a move to Newcastle United after Lyon accepted a £22m bid for the striker. Toon boss Steve McClaren is desperate to land another frontman in the January transfer window with Papiss Cisse expected to be out for at least another month with a groin strain.
But Lacazette is fully focused on securing his place in France's Euro 2016 squad this summer and is said to have dismissed Newcastle's approach out of hand. The 24-year-old scored 29 goals in all competitions for Lyon last season, but he has struggled to reproduce the same prolific form this term at the Stade des Lumieres, scoring eight goals in 24 appearances.
The £22m bid would have broken Newcastle's record transfer fee, beating the £16m spent on Michael Owen in 2005, but McClaren will now need to look elsewhere in his search to bring in attacking reinforcements.Apart from not wanting to disrupt his chances of being part of the national team's attempts of winning the European Championship on home soil, Lacazette is also concerned with how the Magpies' love affair with French players seems to have turned sour.
After the initial success of Hatem Ben Arfa, Moussa Sissoko and Yohan Cabaye at St James' Park, two of those players have since left the north-east with last summer's £12m arrival Florian Thauvin has been an unmitigated disaster.
While McClaren's side toil in the Premier League's bottom three, there is also the chance that Lacazette still harbours hopes of another Champions League club coming in for him, with Lyon themselves currently ninth in Ligue 1, but only six points off second place.
