NEUER EXTENDS STAY AT FCB THROUGH 2019 Friday evening’s Extraordinary General Meeting focused on the election of a new FCB Executive Committee headed by Karl Hopfner and featured an emotional speech by Uli Hoenes.
However, at just after half-past eight Karl-Heinz Rummenigge crowned the evening with the announcement of some welcome news:
“Our goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has today extended his contract until 30 June 2019.”
Neuer’s current contract was due to expire in 2016.
The fact that the 28-year-old has inked a three-year extension at this point in time, just two days after Bayern’s Champions League semi-final exit,
was “astonishing and top-class,” Rummenigge declared. “It's also a mark of his wonderful character,
because he’s said: I want Bayern Munich forever! I’d like to thank Manuel Neuer very warmly for this.“
Neuer joined Bayern from Schalke in 2011. The Germany international keeper has won a string of trophies with FCB (FIFA Club World Cup,
UEFA Super Cup, Champions League, German championship, DFB Cup and DFL Super Cup),
and also chalked up a notable personal honour when he was named World’s Best Goalkeeper last January.
Neuer could “shape an era at Bayern,” board director for sport Matthias Sammer said at the time.
That seems even more likely now he has committed his future to the club.
