Gianfranco Zola sacked as Cagliari coach after less than three months in job• Serie A club likely to turn back to former coach Zdenek Zeman• Zola unable to escape relegation zone after 10 games in charge Gianfranco Zola has been sacked as coach of Cagliari after less than three months in the job, the Serie A club announced on Monday. The Italian, who took over on 24 December, has not been able to turn around the team’s fortunes in his 10 games in charge with Cagliari four points adrift of safety.
Zdenek Zeman, who made way for Zola but is still being paid by the club, is likely to be put back in charge. In a statement confirming Zola and his backroom staff’s departure, Cagliari said: “The decision was made reluctantly against a great man who wrote unforgettable pages in the history of Cagliari, giving lustre and international prestige to the land of Sardinia.
“He and his staff go with the thanks for the work done in recent months with dedication, professionalism and passion, and the heartfelt good luck for the rest of his career.”
The former Napoli, Chelsea and Italy forward, who finished his playing career at the club in 2005, managed two wins, two draws and six defeats, leaving Cagliari joint 18th in Serie A.
Claudio Ranieri, Walter Zenga and Delio Rossi are also in the frame should Zeman opt not to return.
