http://www.bundesliga.com/en/tournaments/news/2013/0000262446.phpDFL Supercup | 27.07.2013 22:31:26 Dortmund prevail against Bayern in Supercup thrillerDortmund - Borussia Dortmund delivered the clearest possible signal to FC Bayern Munich that the treble winners will not be having things all their own way by any means in the months ahead, picking up the first silverware of the 2013/14 season with a 4-2 victory in the DFL Supercup.
Two goals from Marco Reus opened and capped the scoring in a pulsating rerun of last May's UEFA Champions League final, with Arjen Robben hauling Bayern briefly level in the second half before an own-goal from Daniel van Buyten and a fine solo effort from Ilkay Gündogan put the hosts seemingly well in command inside the space of a couple of minutes. A second goal from Robben made things interesting again, but Reus's 86th-minute finish eventually sealed the contest in the Yellow-Blacks' favour.
The hosts, in familiar formation with new signings Sokratis and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang both starting on the bench, hit the ground running and found themselves in front with just five minutes on the clock. Sven Bender met Robert Lewandowski's deflected cross from the right with a downward header that Tom Starke, deputising in goal for the injured Manuel Neuer, completely misjudged, leaving Reus perfectly positioned to nod home.
Lewandowski promptly had the ball in the Bayern net again after Ilkay Gündogan had sliced open the Bayern defence, but the Polish striker was ruled to have been fractionally offside. At the other end, the men from Munich carved out their first opportunity on ten minutes, Xherdan Shaqiri drilling in a low drive from outside the box which home custodian Roman Weidenfeller pushed to the side. The same duo went head-to head again just shy of the quarter-hour mark and again it was the BVB keeper who came out on top, clearing the danger with a great reflex save after Müller had chested the ball down to Shaqiri.
The end-to-end action continued unabated and with 19 minutes played, Starke redeemed himself with a great stop to an effort from Lewandowski, finishing off a fine move by Gündogan and Reus. Both sets of players duly refreshed after a designated drink break on 24 minutes and the still-oppressive heat inside the stadium notwithstanding, there was little let-up in the intensity of the contest. Mario Mandzukic just failed to connect with Alaba's low ball across the six-yard box and after a couple of efforts from Gündogan had been blocked at the Bayern end, the bustling Croatian forward was denied another scoring opportunity late in the half by Mats Hummels' timely intervention.
Into the second half with just the one personnel change, Sebastian Kehl coming on for Bender and taking over the Dortmund captaincy from Weidenfeller in the process. A couple of half-chances at either end later, with 54 minutes on the clock, Bayern then got themselves right back in the contest when Robben took advantage of slack marking from both Kevin Großkreutz and Neven Subotic to head home Philipp Lahm's cross. A turning point for the European champs? Not a bit of it. Two minutes later they were behind again, van Buyten inadvertently directing Gündogan's cross into his own net with an attempted clearing header. Late drama as Dortmund prevail
Incredibly, guest keeper Starke was picking the ball out of the net again some sixty seconds further down the line, Gündogan turning executioner this time as he marched into the Bayern box and gave Müller and van Buyten the slip before curling a fine finish low into the corner. Game over for the European champs? Not a bit of it. With just over 25 minutes to go, Lahm played another ball in from the right, Robben twisted past Subotic with Hummels caught napping as well this time and the Flying Dutchman planted home his second, to make it game on again.
With ten minutes to go, only the woodwork denied Müller the leveller, the Germany international rattling the bar after running onto Thiago's lob, while at the other end a double opportunity for BVB was foiled by a combination of Starke and Alaba. There was no stopping the hosts in the 86th minute however as sub Aubameyang latched onto a loose ball from Thiago and raced into the Bayern box before teeing up Reus to finish from a suspiciously offside position. The goal stood, and the Supercup was Dortmund's.
Line-ups:
