Transfer news: Teenage Norway midfielder Martin Odegaard could move to England in January Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are in the strongest positions to capture wonderkid Martin Odegaard this month, according to Norwegian sports journalist Marius Skelbaek. Bu
t he does not rule out Odegaard moving to England, with Liverpool and Arsenal potential destinations. The 16-year-old attacker is one of the most sought-after young players in football and is believed to have the choice of a plethora of Europe’s top clubs.
Sources understand Odegaard has been hosted by elite clubs from England, Germany and Spain, and he is expected to tour the Netherlands over the coming weeks.
Skelbaek, of sports broadcaster TV2 in Oslo, understands Liverpool or Arsenal would be Odegaard's preferred choice should he decide to move to England, while Ajax, in the Netherlands, could also be an option.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Skelbaek said: “I think he is going to be sold this month because his club, Stromsgodset IF, needs the money and he only has one year left on his contract.
"I think maybe Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are leading the race to sign him and the latest rumour is that Martin is going to visit the Dutch talent industry this month; clubs like Ajax.
"Dutch football could suit him right now and a lot of young players from Denmark and Sweden go to clubs like Ajax, Feyenoord or PSV Eindhoven and do great.
"But it is possible he will move to England. He has been visiting all the big clubs in the Premier League.
He is a big Liverpool fan. They are his and his father’s favourite club. "So who knows? Maybe he could sign for Arsenal, Liverpool, Bayern Munich or Real Madrid." Odegaard - who became Norway's youngest international at the age of 15 and has won three senior caps to date - is an agile playmaker with sharp attacking vision, who Skelbaek likens to current Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho, with shades of Lionel Messi.
“He is a bit taller than Coutinho, elegant with the ball and reads play very well. Messi is his favourite player and you can see some of him in his touch and passing,” he said.
“People should come and see him. How good can he be? His goal a year ago was to get his debut in the Norwegian Premiership when he was 15, and became the youngest player to play and score in that league, and the youngest to play for Norway.
“He has become an attraction, scored some very nice goals, and now the whole of Europe is talking about him.”
