Benfica star Ruben Dias suggested that he may have played his last game for the Portuguese giants as a move to Manchester City looms on the horizon.

Dias, 23, has been followed closely by City scouts for several seasons thanks to his exploits in the middle of defence at Benfica.

Dias, who represented Portugal at the 2018 World Cup, could command a transfer fee of up to ?55 million (£50m/$64m), although City would also be keen to include Nicolas Otamendi as a makeweight in the deal in the hope of sealing a lower asking price.

Jose Gimenez of Atletico Madrid and Sevilla's Jules Kounde have also been mentioned as possible targets for the Citizens at the back, but Dias is their top transfer priority.

While there has been no official confirmation over a deal being struck, Dias' reaction on Saturday to questioning following his side's Liga NOS clash hinted that his time at Estadio da Luz was coming to a close.

"I am very happy, obviously," the Benfica captain, who appeared to be on the verge of tears during his brief interview, told BTV after netting in his side's 2-0 win over Moreirense.

"This was a very important game for me, and to be able to crown it with a goal... it was a special moment.

"I think that everyone here will be able to guess why that is.

"It was without a doubt something special. The captain's armband too was special."

Benfica coach Jorge Jesus also recognised after the game that Dias would soon be leaving, telling reporters: "I am almost certain this was his last game. Sometimes in football everything can change at the last minute, but I don't think this is the case.

"We are sad to see him go. He is a [Benfica academy] Seixal product, a captain, an international... But I am also to blame for him leaving.

"It is related to our Champions League elimination, there are things that have to be balanced and Ruben has a lot of market value."

The defender has been with Benfica since the age of 11, joining from hometown boys' club Estrela da Amadora in the suburbs of capital city Lisbon.

He has gone on to make more than 130 appearances at the club, forming a key part of the Benfica team that took the 2018-19 Primeira Liga title.

At international level the centre-back made his senior bow with Portugal in 2018 having represented the Selecao at every level from U-16 to 21, and currently boasts 19 caps as well as the 2019 UEFA Nations League crown.

Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Portugal defender Ruben Dias from Benfica for £65m.

City's Argentina centre-back Nicolas Otamendi, 32, will go the other way for about £13.7m in a separate transfer.

Manager Pep Guardiola has wanted a right-sided central defender since Vincent Kompany retired last summer.

On Sunday night Benfica released a statement confirming the two transfers but said contracts still need to be signed by the players.

Dias, 23, was captain for Benfica's win over Moreirense on Saturday and hugged team-mates and sporting director Rui Costa at the final whistle.

After the match, Dias - who had scored his 12th goal for the club in 133 appearances - told Benfica TV: "It was a very important game for me and being able to mark it with a goal was very special.

"I believe that everyone already has an idea why I hugged Rui Costa."

The failure to secure a replacement for former skipper Kompany was seen as a major reason for City not putting up more of a challenge to Liverpool in last season's Premier League title race.

Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly, 29, was initially City's top target this summer, but the Italian club wanted £80m for the Senegal defender, which City were not prepared to pay.

City have completed the signing of Portuguese international Ruben Dias from Benfica.

The 23-year-old centre-back has signed a six-year contract, which keeps him at the Club until the summer of 2026.

Following in the footsteps of Ferran Torres and Nathan Ake, he is our third signing of the summer.

Dias has made more than 100 appearances in three seasons for the Lisbon giants, with whom he won a league title in 2018/19 and has been capped 19 times by Portugal.

Having developed a reputation as one of the most promising defenders in Europe, he says moving to City was an easy decision as he feels he is joining a club where he can improve and be successful.

Manchester City have signed 23-year-old defender Ruben Dias from Benfica on a six-year deal for about £65m.

Argentine centre-back Nicolas Otamendi has moved the other way for £13.7m.

Dias becomes City boss Pep Guardiola's third significant summer signing, following the arrivals of defender Nathan Ake and forward Ferran Torres.

Portugal international Dias graduated from the Benfica academy before making 113 senior appearances, and winning the Portuguese title in 2018-19.

He has also won 19 caps for Portugal and he will bolster the City defence, which conceded five goals in their recent defeat to Leicester City.

Dias has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in recent years, but he completes Guardiola's search for a right-sided central defender.

He is being touted as Vincent Kompany's replacement, with Guardiola opting to utilise Fernandinho as a central defender last season following the influential Belgian's departure.

Although City are paying more than the £60m release clause which existed in Dias' previous contract, it is less than the £80m he has in the current one, which he signed in November 2019.

"Ruben is a player we have admired for some time and we have been impressed with how he has progressed at Benfica," said City's director of football Txiki Begiristain.

"He has developed into a real leader and as a defender, he has all the attributes we are looking for. He is strong in the air, good in one-v-one situations and technically, he is very good, so we are confident he can thrive in our system."
