Schalke to face PAOK after Metalist ban
UEFA have banned FC Metalist Kharkiv from all European competitions for the 2013/14 season and reinstated PAOK FC, who will be Schalke's new play-off opponents
Nyon - FC Schalke 04 have new UEFA Champions League play-off opponents after FC Metalist Kharkiv were banned from all UEFA competitions for the 2013/14 season and replaced by Greek side PAOK FC.
UEFA’s decision to disqualify Metalist followed a two-hour long disciplinary hearing on Tuesday, which was attended by the Ukrainian club’s lawyers.
Schalke to play at home first
Several hours later, European football's governing body announced that PAOK, who are coached by former Schalke supremo Huub Stevens and were beaten by the Ukrainians in the third qualifying round, would instead take their place in the play-offs and face the Royal Blues, with the first leg being played at S04's Veltins Arena on 21 August.
Metalist still have the right to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), but that will not have any effect on Schalke's play-off tie.
