Rhian Brewster could leave Liverpool to return to Swansea on loan for next seasonA permanent move elsewhere could still be possible, if Liverpool believe the price is right
Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster may return to Swansea City on a season loan after seeing several interested Premier League clubs pursue alternative targets.
Newcastle, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace each made official approaches for the 20-year-old, only to be informed the club and player are in no rush to make a decision on his future. Each of those clubs has now signed a different striker, Newcastle recruiting Callum Wilson, Aston Villa completing a £28 million deal for Ollie Watkins, and Crystal Palace turning their attention to a loan deal for Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi. Brighton and Hove Albion also have a strong interest in Brewster, who has become one of the most sought-after players within Jurgen Klopp’s squad deemed available for a move. It is conceivable a bid of around £25 million could lead to a permanent departure, with Liverpool potentially adding a buy-back clause as insurance should the striker excel at another club.
However, given he remains unproven at the highest level, a loan deal looks most feasible before the transfer window closes in October. Given their style of football, Brighton are an attractive option, but Brewster will be weighing up how likely he is to force his way into the starting line-up if he makes a Premier League switch at this point of his career.
That has brought Swansea City back into the equation, where Brewster spent the second half of last season and he has an established relationship with former Liverpool academy coach Steve Cooper.
Returning to Wales, where he is certain to be a permanent starter, is a consideration to enable Brewster to get a full year’s senior football behind him, safe in the knowledge the Premier League interest will remain strong in 2021. For Liverpool’s part, they know from recent experience how Brewster’s value could be enhanced rather than compromised should he return to the championship.
A year ago there was as much interest in Welsh winger Harry Wilson after his successful year on loan at Derby County as there is this summer after last year’s more inconsistent spell at Bournemouth.
Wilson is another of those expected to leave in October.
