Kranjcar closes on Sunderland move
August 17, 2011

.......

However, Bruce has dismissed claims from Niko Kranjcar's representative, Adrian Alja, that he is close to clinching a deal for the Croatia international.

He said: "I don't know where that's come from. As I have said repeatedly now for a couple of weeks, I am very, very pleased with what we have done and if we don't do another thing, I will be delighted with what we have done.

"I don't know where the Kranjcar thing came from. I have seen quotes from his agent - certainly, I have not spoken to Kranjcar's agent, so I don't really know where that has come from.''

Udinese close to Carcela deal
Standard Liege midfielder set to move on

Last Updated: August 18, 2011 12:26pm

Italian club Udinese are closing in on the signing of Standard Liege midfielder Mehdi Carcela.

Francesco Guidolin's side have made a ?9.5million offer for the 22-year-old, who is expected to leave the Belgium club before the end of the transfer window.

Carcela has turned down a contract offer at Standard Liege but Udinese face competition from Spartak Moscow for the player's signature.

His agent, Jorge Vidal, told Belgian newspaper Het Nleuwsblad: "Udinese is a very serious option for Carcela.

"The transfer market will be open for another 14 days, but I don't think they will wait that long to complete the deal.

"They already offered more than Spartak Moscow.

"Mehdi isn't interested in a move to Russia. But with Russian sides you never know, they keep trying.

"Would he prefer a move to Italy? We will see about that. He is looking for a move away from Standard."

Carcela came through Standard Liege's academy and has represented Belgium in friendlies, but has since chosen to pursue an international career with Morocco.

McCarthy in Latics talks
Martinez keen to reward youngster with improved terms

By James Pearson - Follow me: @SkySportsJamesP.   Last Updated: August 18, 2011 1:22pm

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has confirmed the club have opened contract talks with highly-rated midfielder James McCarthy.

The former Hamilton man impressed for the Latics last term, leading to speculation over the 20-year-old's future with a number of rival clubs interested.

McCarthy is now into the third year of the five-year deal penned after leaving the Accies, but Martinez wants to reward him with new and improved terms.

The Spaniard insists the Glasgow-born Republic of Ireland international is part of the club's long-term future and one of a core group of players he wants to retain.

Diamond

"James is a big diamond of ours," explained Martinez. "I felt he had a tremendous season last campaign and he deserves a reward.

"We've got another five or six players that we're going to look to try to reward and give them new contracts.

"We're still in talks, nothing has been finalised, but it's not a real secret that we want to reward the players who have been performing well and developing with us, and James McCarthy is in that group."

Meanwhile, Martinez has dismissed reports of a rift with striker Hugo Rodallega, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

The Colombian ace has been linked with a move away from the DW Stadium, but Wigan's manager insists there is no 'problem' with the talented marksman.

No problem

"We've never had a problem with Hugo," he added. "I know there's been a few things in the press, I don't know where they've come from. We would love to have Hugo here for the long term but at the moment it's not a priority.

"His agent's in Colombia, we've got a very good relationship, and we'll see what develops from there. But my focus on Hugo is for him to be as fit as he can be because when he's on top form he's a unique player and an important player."

Wigan continued to be linked with players before the transfer window closes, although he is refusing to name who is on his shopping list despite reports of a bid for West Brom's Peter Odemwingie.

"It would be wrong of me to speak about other players that are employed by other clubs. I can guarantee my focus is on the players we've got," he concluded.

Official: Fiorentina sign Houssine Kharja from Genoa

The midfielder has signed a two-year deal with his new club as he leaves the Marassi after a disappointing 24 month stint

Aug 18, 2011 1:20:00 PM

By Stefan Coerts

Fiorentina have completed the transfer of Morocco international Houssine Kharja from Genoa for an undisclosed fee. The Tuscan outfit have acquired 50 per cent of the player's rights. Kharja has signed a two-year deal with an option for an additional season.

Fiorentina were in the market for a new midfielder because of the ongoing uncertainty about the future of Riccardo Montolivo, who is being linked with AC Milan.

Kharja joined Genoa from Siena in the summer of 2009, but he never really lived up to the expectations at the Luigi Ferraris club, partially due to a serious injury.

The 28-year-old spent the second half of the 2010-11 campaign on loan at Inter, but the Giuseppe Meazza side decided not to exercise their option to make his stay at the club permanent.

Kharja will now be looking to revitalise his career at Fiorentina as he joins other new recruits such as Gianni Munari, Matija Nastasic and Andrea Lazzari.

Spurs open door to Modric deal

Harry Redknapp has admitted he could sell Luka Modric and improve his Spurs side with the cash from the midfielder's sale.

Spurs have been resolute in their stance that they would not entertain Chelsea's interest in the Croatian playmaker.

But with the Blues likely to return with a new bid before the end of the month, Redknapp's stance has shifted somewhat, with the Tottenham chief admitting he could use any cash to bolster his squad in a handful of areas.

With that in mind, Redknapp wants no repeat of the Dimitar Berbatov sale to Manchester United, which saw the striker move just before the 2008 transfer window shut.

Redknapp, quoted in a series of national newspapers, said: "We've got two options with Luka; either we keep a fantastic player or we sell him, get the money and bring in four players and have a better team.

"I want him to stay but if he's going I want the opportunity to get other players in.

"There's no chance the chairman (Daniel Levy) will sell him on the last day of the transfer window. He did that with Berbatov a few years ago and ended up with no strikers. He won't do that again.

"It's a difficult situation for Modric. We all love our club and everything, but what would you do if someone offered to treble your wages?

"He's had his head turned by the chance to play in a team that could win the Champions League this season and I think people can probably understand that."

An ongoing shortage in midfield could lead to moves for West Ham's Scott Parker - subject of a bid from QPR - or Real Madrid's Lassana Diarra but a deal for the latter's sometime team-mate Emmanuel Adebayor is more imminent.

The Togolese striker is currently contracted to, but out of favour at, Manchester City and his preferred move to Real, where he played on loan last term, is off the table.

Spurs are ready to step in with a loan move despite the fact that Adebayor made his name in England with their bitter rivals Arsenal.

In fact, Redknapp believes the messy nature of his departure from the Emirates Stadium could help endear him to Spurs fans.

"I'm sure they will take to him because he fell out with Arsenal," Redknapp said. "Arsenal fans hate him so Tottenham fans will love him. He upset them so he'll be a hero here."

Rovers close on Vukcevic

Blackburn Rovers are closing in on the signing of Sporting Lisbon forward Simon Vukcevic.

Rovers have confirmed to Sky Sports News that the Montenegro forward, who can also play in midfield, was undergoing a medical at Ewood Park.

The 25-year-old has long been linked with a switch to England and he finally looks set to get his move to the Premier League.

It is reported a fee of £2million has been agreed with Sporting for Vukcevic, who could pen a deal in the next 24 hours.

Rovers boss Steve Kean confirmed to the Lancashire Telegraph he was hoping to conclude three deals.

Kean said: "Things have moved on. We have had bids accepted and we are close to three players now."

Eto'o switch on ice
Transfer talks regarding Inter striker hit a stumbling block

Last Updated: August 18, 2011 4:17pm

Discussions regarding Inter Milan striker Samuel Eto'o's proposed switch to ambitious Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala have stalled.

It is unclear at present whether the breakdown in talks is down to a disagreement between the two clubs or issues regarding personal terms.

A deal was expected to be pushed through in the next few days, with Eto'o's representatives having held further meetings with Anzhi officials on Thursday.

It is claimed that a ?25million (£21.8m) package has been put to Inter, with Eto'o offered a three-year contract worth around ?15million (£13m) a season.

Reports, however, claim that Inter are holding out for ?30million (£26.1m), as they consider their 30-year-old frontman to still be in his prime.

Negotiations

Talks remain ongoing, but there are a number of stumbling blocks that will need to be overcome in order for an agreement to be reached.

"I'm not optimistic at this moment in time," said intermediary and Fifa agent Peppino Tirri.

"There are a few things that need to be sorted out. Nothing has been resolved. The deal is on ice for now.

"Negotiations have come to an end for today; we'll talk again on Friday."
