Arsenal's struggle to cure the ills of their midfield continues after Rennes rejected a ?20 million bid for Yann M'Vila.

Canal + reports the French club said they had rebuffed a substantial bid from the north Londoners for the 21-year-old France international.

Arsene Wenger is trying to bolster his midfield after losing Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona last week and the coach is eager to fill in the gaps before the transfer window slams shut in less than a fortnight's time.

However, after also seeing Marseille's Didier Deschamps turn down a Gunners move for Mathieu Valbuena, Wenger's plans for improvement to his squad have been dealt a blow.

Around ?20m of the income received for Fabregas was aimed at reinvesting in the squad, but Rennes instantly rejected the offer for M'Vila.

The youngster recently signed a contract extension with his club until the summer of 2015, and has also been linked with Inter, Real Madrid and AC Milan.

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan's agent is engaged in talks with Inter, the player's father has revealed.

The Uruguay international has been strongly linked with a new challenge after a season in which he struggled to hit top form under Quique Sanchez Flores.

Inter have been suggested as the likeliest destination for the 32-year-old as the Italian giants look for a replacement for the Anzhi Makhachkala-bound Samuel Eto'o.

And while Forlan's agent was quoted on Saturday as saying he had not been contacted by Inter, it appears that the latest developments in the Eto'o saga have forced the Serie A side to move in quickly for the former Manchester United forward.

"I would like him to go to Inter because they are a great team," Pablo Forlan told 1410 AM Libre. "His representative is negotiating for him in Milan and Diego is waiting, anxious that it will be solved."

The striker's father added that his son will undoubtedly leave the Vicente Calderon this summer and lashed out at Atletico for the manner in which they treat players.

"Atletico should coddle their stars a little more, they did not do that with Sergio Aguero [who joined Manchester City this summer), and they aren’t doing it with Diego, who has given his all for this team and now he is not happy," he noted.

"A clear example is that Real Madrid buy in order to improve, while Atletico sell and do not invest in winning the league. Instead of corralling their idols and keeping them there, they sell them.

"If Diego does not go to Inter, he will go to another club - I do not know which one, but it is 100 per cent sure he will not stay at Atletico.

"His cycle (at Atletico) is over, though he still has a contract."

Aquilani in Milan claim



Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani claims he is close to joining Italian giants AC Milan.

Aquilani spent last season back in his homeland with a loan spell at Juventus, before returning to Anfield earlier in the summer.

Aquilani has been continually linked with a move back to his native Italy summer with the former Roma man seemingly not figuring in Kenny Dalglish's plans.

Juventus declined to sign Aquilani on a permanent basis because of his price-tag, while the 27-year-old also came close to joining Fiorentina earlier this summer, but he pulled out of the move as he wanted a permanent transfer rather than a loan deal.

Milan have now expressed an interest in Aquilani as they look to bolster their midfield options after being frustrated in their attempts to land Fiorentina's Riccardo Montolivo

"I am close to joining Milan," Aquilani told Gazzetta dello Sport.

It remains to be seen if the move would be a loan deal or a permanent deal with Liverpool thought to be keen on a permanent transfer so that they can raise funds for their own transfer plans.

Manchester City defender Wayne Bridge has reportedly rejected a loan move to Celtic, according to The Sunday Mirror.

Bridge’s career looks to be over at Eastlands, and despite their willingness to subsidise a move to Celtic, the former England left-back seems to prefer a move to another club in England rather than going to Scotland.

City were apparently prepared to pay the majority of Bridge’s wages if he was on loan at Celtic, with some reports suggesting they would have been happy for the Bhoys to only contribute £20,000-a-week of Bridge’s £90,000-a-week wage deal.

However, any move has been rejected by Bridge, who has been the subject of speculation linking him to moves to Newcastle and West Ham, where he was on loan for part of last season.

Bridge's refusal to move north of the border will come as another blow to Roberto Mancini, who is keen to trim his squad, with striker Emmanuel Adebayor expected to join Tottenham on a season-long loan.

Zenit St Petersburg have shown their hand for Napoli striker Ezequiel Lavezzi after making an ?18 million bid.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the Russian club, coached by former Roma boss Luciano Spalletti, has opened dialogue with the Italian side.

An ?18m offer is believed to have been made for the 26-year-old Argentina striker who is tied to the San Paolo until 2015.

However, despite speculation rising over the striker's future, coach Walter Mazzarri last week said his intention is to keep Lavezzi.

Napoli are said to be working on a move for Villarreal's Giuseppe Rossi, but the plan is to hold onto the Argentina ace so he can play alongside the Italian if he arrives.

Inter are also in the hunt for Lavezzi who is valued by Napoli at ?32m.

The Italians play Barcelona on the Gamper Trophy friendly on Monday.

Real Mallorca midfielder Jonathan de Guzman has turned down the chance to join Russian side Rubin Kazan.

Sports.ru reports the 23-year-old was on the verge of joining Rubin, but the move broke down over personal terms.

Mallorca and Rubin are said to have agreed an ?8.5 million transfer fee, but talks stumbled when it was time to finalise the player's contract, leaving the deal to fizzle out.

Spanish club Villarreal have been linked with de Guzman all summer but are yet to agree a few with their Liga rivals.

De Guzman scored five goals in 33 La Liga appearances last season following his move from Feyenoord last year.

Inter striker Samuel Eto'o is expected to complete his move to Anzhi Makhachkala officially either on Monday or Tuesday, his agent Claudio Vigorelli has said.

The announcement arrives less than 24 hours after reports in Italy said a verbal agreement over the transfer between the clubs had been reached.

The transfer fee agreed upon has not been confirmed officially, but it is believed to be between ?25 million and ?28m.

And Vigorelli has confirmed the dates of when the move should be announced.

"If all goes well, the medical and the official announcement will arrive Monday or Tuesday," Vigorelli told L'Equipe.

Eto'o is expected to pen a three-year deal totalling ?60m in wages.

The striker, 30, moved to San Siro in 2009 as part of the deal which took Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Barcelona and has been a stand-out performer for the 2009-10 Champions League winners.

He was Inter's top scorer last season, netting a total of 37 goals in all competitions, and helping the Milan club win the Coppa Italia.
